i believe manny steward would be the best coach for khan

It would be if I was trying to advise a boxer who has just done something 99.9% of boxing fans thought he couldn't of his next move.

 

I'm not denying that fighters go with many trainers throughout their careers. But what happens is that they find the trainer that complements their natural game and personality, rather than picking bits up here and there.

I don't think Khan has it in him to become a defencsive slickster, regardless of how much time he spends with Steward. He's reckless to the core. He showed it against Prescott and again against Maidana.

 

Which is not at all what Steward teaches.

Personally I think Khan will only go from strength to strength with Roach but the Parkinsons is clearly having more and more of an effect on Freddie and one has to wonder how long he can carry on training...with this in mind I cant think of anyone better suited to taking Khan forward after Freddie steps down.

 

What has that at all got to do with Mayweather, who has a totally different style from any fighter he has ever trained?

If you've watched much of Wlad Klitschko you'll see he's actually coached him out of using the shoulder roll.

 

Steward likes fighters to work at range as much as possible. Not really Mayweather stuff. More Hearns, McClellan stuff...Double Jab Right Hand & off at Angle, Simplicity at it's best but all about fundamentals and controlling opponent at range.

Yes mid-west fighters in U.S are notoriously slick fighters. Obviously not all. But kids seem to be taught to be slick and fight with poise and class.

 

Steward's biggest success was stopping Lennox falling over himself as he threw the right hand. It's a very amateur move and something Khan does too. Also, like Lewis, Khan still backs up in a straight line.

Now, Manny never got rid of those tendencies completely, but he did get Lewis to measure the distance better. He got him to use the jab more effectively, to step to the side after he jabbed and to follow the right with a left hook.

Khan, as improved as he is with Roach, is still very untidy. He needs someone like Steward to teach him to be a little more considered in his work, and to place his shots more effectively. And how to put an offensive fighter onto the backfoot.

Khan just throws the kitchen sink at times, and never stops to consider the holes he leaves in his own defence. Manny encourages fighters to consider where each punch will leave them in ring position, with their hands and with their feet:

Are you in position to throw again, are you out of range, can you see your opponent's best punch coming, are you in ring-centre, are you forcing your opponent to over-commit when he does throw?

Even with a smaller, faded fighter like Cotto (it hurts to write that), he got the Puerto Rican to consider where each attack would take him. And generally, he would leave Yuri foreman struggling to get his shots off consistently.

Amir doesn't need to be slick, but he needs to plan his attacks better.

 

Well its easier said that done isnt it? Im not quite sure how he could e more slick with his footwork, he didnt stay still for two second.
