Berto questions Ortiz's loss to Mayweather

International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Andre Berto has some doubts regarding former World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Victor Ortiz's loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September 17.

Mayweather knocked out Ortiz in the fourth round of their bout via a "legal sucker punch," when he tagged Ortiz with a 1-2 combination while the Mexican boxer was not paying attention.

But Berto is questioning why Ortiz was unable to beat referee Joe Cortez's 10-count.

"I just don't know if that shot was as hard as the one I hit him with, that's what I'm saying," Berto said in a RingTV.com interview. [http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/...reak-mayweathers-nose-with-head-butts?start=1

Berto knocked down Ortiz twice when they fought in April 2011, but Ortiz rose both times and rallied to take a unanimous decision victory.

Berto implied that Ortiz may have deliberately stayed down on the canvas.

"Either he looked up and was thinking about life and said, 'You know, I don't think that I want to do this,' and just stayed down, or I don't know," Berto said.

"I've never in my life seen somebody so happy to get knocked out. Never," he added. "They stopped the fight and he's smiling, hugging, kissing everybody around him."

Berto said that Ortiz embarrassed himself by attempting to apologize to Mayweather after an intentional headbutt.

"Ortiz just did a whole lot of hugging and kissing, and got knocked out," he said.

Berto and Ortiz are set to face each other in a rematch on February 11.

It was really scripted.... I think MoneyMay paid Ortiz lot of money here!!

if floyd would have paid him he would have organised a far more fan pleasing/resume building KO.

Somebody tell Berto that there's a huge difference between a normal punch and a sucker punch. Surely, being a fighter himself, he's aware of this?

It wasn't in the spirit of the sport. But did he really break any rules?

Perhaps not. He's already proven himself to be a bit of an idiot and a straight up ***** before.

I don't know, maybe Ortiz did give up. But that was a hell of a right hand he was hit with while not protecting himself.

It's Ortiz's post fight antics that bring into question the legitimacy of the fight. I would think the normal reaction would have anger, disbelief, etc. Maybe a statement saying he was going to protest to the commission and go for a no contest, something! Not smiles and shrugging of the shoulders.
