I blame the fans for why boxers are so scared to lose. I do believe boxing fans from the past had more knowledge and respect for boxing, which is why even guys with 9-10 losses were still classed as great boxers and therfore took tough matches knowing a loss wouldn't totally destroy their legacy. Look at la motta and how many times he lost to Ray Robinson. It seems nowdays that if a boxer loses then he's quickly regarded as overrated and a bum, and most of the time the people saying this are the ones who supported that boxer before he lost. No wonder why boxers are so scared to lose. It seems to be the end of the world now when a boxer loses and it's take a while to get that respect back from fans of boxing, casual or likewise. The truth is they're more casual fans than die hard boxing fans and the way they act to boxers after they lose is a bloody disgrace.

We are to blame aswell for this weak mentality of why boxers are afraid to take risks.

To a certain extent the fan carries some blame.

I think however that most of the blame lies in the promoter who has money stake in his fighter.

Promoters are not going to bring risk to a fighter the masses think highly of if he can get away with making money matching him with lesser fighters.
I think its always been this way but its more prevalent now with the creation of "instant media."

The human being is naturally a being that can be easily influenced and brainwashed through creative marketing called hype.
Most sport fans are not very knowledgeable on the product they buy and watch period, and this is exponentially more true with fightfans as unlike other sports, its not something they grow up playing themselves.

Sadly, there's not enough knowledgeable boxing fans to do much about forcing promoters to stage better matchups

I blame the promoters. Don King is the genius that started all of this when he figured out the public would pay to see Tyson on PPV against bums.

I don't. Fans are fans with every sport. Some sports are successful and some not, with more or less the same demographics of fans. Problem with boxing is that if you lose a fight, your opponent may never give you a rematch and there's nothing you can do about it. Boxing needs a good international federation which handles the financial shares and more importantly makes necessary fights happen, like Floyd vs Pac or Adonis vs Kovalev, and if a fighter loses a fight, he should be able to get a rematch after a period of successful fights whether his opponents wants or not. If a fighter refuses to fight a necessary fight, he should be stripped of all of his belts. This promoter/sanctioning body mess is what kills boxing.

If there were no World Cups, where every contitent champion claimed they are the best and never faced each other, football wouldn't be the football today which billions of people follow.

ok call it that and imagine NFL without Superbowl, that's what boxing is today. It's not handled well, so it's losing popularity every day.

Pac knows that a loss doesn't make him any less great if you continually push yourself to the limits, floyd does aswell but talks a lot of ****,a true warrior wants to be the best and prove it in the ring floyd wants none of that

Yeah but look at how much ridicule Pacquiao had to cope with just because he got knocked out by another hall of fame boxer. I just think boxing fans from the past had a bit more overall knowledge and class than current boxing fans do today.
