This goes to further prove that Roy's chin wasn't glass, Its so obvious that moving down in weight really affected both these guys punch resistance. Byrd has always been known to have a rock hard head and he was hurt several times and then TKO'd by a guy not known for power. Roy, Byrd, and Tarver all suffered the same affect when moving down from a higher weight its quit obvious what the problem is
Byrd is really, really done. Let's hope he knows it, his family knows it and he gets a new profession.
That, his constantly wobbly legs, the inability to get out of the way of punches that wouldn't have touched him even a couple of years ago, the lessened punch resistance - all the telltale of a SHOT fighter. I don't usually pronounce a guy "shot" after one fight, but Byrd show SO many signs of being washed up, it seems indisputable. He should really hang 'em up.
Exactly. This forum is so quick to put a "shot" on every fighter who loses. This one fits perfectly. I've always respected Chris and I really hope he hangs em up.
In hindsight i feel like an idiot for thinking Chris would win. If you just look at his recent performances + the massive weight loss (like what happened to RJJ/Tarver) it's clear he wouldn't have much left. atsch
He was the #1 at most heavy rankings before the Wlad rematch. He probably was past his prime but he wasn't done. BTW: I'm waiting for the "Wlad's power is overrated" threads.
He just wasn't right. Not just past it, but like he has some taken one big punch too many. His corner should've called it. Nady should've called it sooner. And what, was the ringside doctor in the shitter?
I think Jay Nady was going to stop the fight anyway, but gave Byrd a chance to at least retain his pride and be stopped on his feet.. By the way, Povetkin gave Byrd a pretty bad beating too. Not single big punches, but he throws about 60-70 per round and those long grueling battles is usually what takes a lot out of a fighter. Whatever he had left after that, he lost during the weight loss.
I'd still say that going down to LHW was the right move for Byrd. I mean he didn't have no future in the HW division, so he had to try something completely different. It just didn't work out. But at least he tried. He had a great career and he should retire now. The fact that he managed to come down to LHW from HW demands a lot of respect in itself. I never really liked watching Byrd, but one has to respect him - he was competitive with the best HWs for years, guys that were much bigger and stronger than him, he always fought his heart out, took the biggest shots from Klitschko and Ibeabuchi and still got up. He beat some good HWs and even held two belts.
He was in good shape though. Its hard to believe he took monster shots from Wlad and Povetkin and here he couldnt take weak punches from a LHW. But lets be honest even though he made Wlad and Povetkin miss, he was a punching bag for them, a movable punching bag.
