Pavlik is not under rated. He simply needs to prove himself more especially if he intends to move up in weight and fight more seasoned opponents.

    That's where we differ.

I see Pavlik getting frustrated not being able to land a clean shot on Winky. Kelly has never fought this kind of fighter, and once has realises he isn't going to be knocking anything out, his confidence will diminish. In contrast, I see Winky taking most shots on the arms, and coming back with counters, who is just about equal with Kelly in terms of speed.

To beat a fighter like Winky you either need to have a variety of shots, or you have to fight him at his own game. I don't see Pavlik roughing up Winky in the clinch, and nor do I see him trying to counter Winky and letting him control the pace of the fight. Instead, I see Winky making Pavlik miss and landing counters.

Jermain Taylor in his second fight with Pavlik began to fade down the stretch because he was eating a lot of Pavlik's right hands. Winky is more experianced than Taylor, and won't be getting hit with nearly as many shots.

    UD Winky.

Jermain Taylor went into the fight coming off a devestating knockout loss to Pavlik. Winky won't be.

And like I said, Winky Wright won't be slowing down because he won't be getting hit that often. It's fair to say, Jermain opened up a fair few times in that fight, and got hit with quite a few right hands. This is why he faded, and that's why he lossed the fight. The same won't be happening to Winky, who is also more experianced than both Pavlik and Taylor.

I have no arguementd with you predicting a Pavlik win. I just see the fight going differently is all. :good

That's a scenario like when Nigel Benn came unstuck against Michael Watson. Benn was a wrecking ball back then, but came up against an opponent who knew how to defend expertly. I like Pavlik but I see nothing exceptional about him.

I'm a big Kelly Pavlik fight, but he has raised some questions within myself. I noticed he had the same game plan for both Jermain Taylor fights and it almost didn't work in the second fight. I am wondering if he is capable of changing up his game plan in the middle of a fight? Another thing is I wish he would throw a harder and steadier jab. I noticed he uses it a lot just to blind his opponents..that can't work with everybody, but when he does throw it hard it's an amazing jab.

As much as he's pumped up, it's hard to see how he's underrated.

I've been doing it a bit more often, lately! Its what I originally came here to discuss, but the Lounge snared me pretty quickly! Also, at the time, I was pretty disgusted w/boxing.

One more factor. Kelly talked a little smack about Winky. I think Kelly really dislikes him. What if Kelly used his perogative as champ to defend? How does Winky do his defensive 'genius' thing and count punch?

Pavlik is definitely a beast and I'll pick him over everyone at middleweight. Having said that, I am extremely confident that Kessler and Calzaghe toy with him.

After Cal's last fight I've seen more support for Pavlik than I have since I've been on this board. One of the reasons I'd like to see the fight made with Cal before he retires. If he fights RJJ it might be another fight the quailty of his last. Cal needs to fight someone with a pulse if he is doing his 'legacy' tour.

I feel his resume is overrated but he could still be the real deal.
His only credible win is really just Taylor.

really? how about Edison Miranda, Fulgencio Zuniga, and Zertuche?

i totally agree with the original poster- its hard to believe anyone still questions Pavlik. why isnt he higher on the P4P lists, either? I guess "knocking people the **** out" isnt a technical skill.

Calzaghe will be in a lot of trouble if he takes on Pavlik. when Kessler was actually throwing, he did well (see R4), but he just isnt tenacious enough.

Pavlik is rated right where he should be. Most people in the know see that he's the real deal. His detractors are critical mainly because his business like method is not sizzling. Just watch a few Monzon fights, then a few Pavlik fights. These guys look very similar to me. Underrated speed, not the most graceful looking, but they wear their opponents down and with unnatural all around wirey body power, and take em out with heavy blows. I would like to see Pavlik tighten up his defense a bit though.
