Pavlik is underrated, but it's understandable! Most boxing fans(unless you watched pavlik on Telefutura) had no idea who he was until the Miranda fight which took place less than a year ago. He is still young and will get a chance to state his case regarding his place in the PFP standings within the next couple of years.
Someone mentioned that Pavlik had the same game plan in the 2nd Taylor fight as the first. I think that was because Taylor sold a lot of people on the idea that he would go for an early KO. Many, many people predicted that the only thing predictable was that it wouldn't go the distance! I predicted Pavlik in 5. I was, obviously, WAY off. Kelly did adjust in that 2nd fight. With injuries to both hands he adjusted to a much improved JT and out boxed him 116-112. JT beat BHop twice, and held Winky to a draw, and "The Ghost" OUT BOXED HIM!! However, he gets little credit on this forum. If Pavlik knocked out Big Foot, and then scored a UD over King Kong, a certain group of posters in this forum would say; "Big deal! Godzilla would starch him!" I think that the chances for a Pavlik/Calzaghe fight depend the outcome of Abraham/Miranda. If Pantera wins, no one will care about Pavlik/Abraham. That would change Pavlik's agenda, and open the door for a Calzaghe fight. Slappy Joe fights like an epaleptic baboon on crack. I just don't get why people think Joe would have an easy night with Pavlik. This whole idea that Pavlik is somehow tailor made to make Slappy look good is ludicrous. Everytime Joe squares up and starts throwing a bunch of slaps Pavlik will eat those slaps like little Hershey's Kisses, return fire, and put Joe on his ass. Everytime Joe rushes in with his head down swinging wild Pavlik will crush him with uppercuts and left hooks. This is a fight Joe cannot win unless he changes pretty much everything he does in the ring. And Kessler? BULL****! The robo-dane would simply be outclassed in most every way. I've said this 100 times, but Kessler said of Calzaghe,"He ruined my boxing." If those slaps ruined his boxing, what the **** is he gonna do against a guy with the same workrate who sits down on damn near everything he throws? Oh, and someone ask about Pavlik fighting southpaws. The only one I recall was McKart, and he was WAAAAY past his best. Boo
I think he is a very good fighter with alot of heart. To me it's all about what you compare him with, as some seems to think he is the 2nd Messiah, while others think he is just some sloppy slow boxer with KO power. To me, he is something in between; he throws a vast array of shots, doesn't move too greatly in the ring, has a unique cork screw shot, and a great chin for a "KO" puncher. I think he has a great deal of areas to improve, especially in D, but he is definately a naturally gifted fighter that has his own style.
Spinks outboxed JT as well, but is incredibly featherfisted. Hopkins beat a naturally smaller man in Wright, who isn't prime either. JT was better when he fought Hopkins, only to begin to decline right after, and got worse and worse. Hopkins fought JT - but he tried to negate Joe's speed by holding every time it came to some sort of punch exchange. You simply can't play it like this - "He beat C, who in turn beat B and D, but lost to E, who lost to B. and therefore A is better than all of them". Styles makes fights to a certain degree, gameplans as well. JC is not only a natural SMW, he is also very fast on hands and feet for one as such, he is difficult to fight because he can alter his gameplan, throws all angles, and has a solid chin; JC-Pavlik would be a totally different fight than Hopkins-JC, since Pavlik would try to box with Calzaghe, unlike Hopkins - slaps or no slaps, pop in shots, or no pop - Calzaghe would outbox Pavlik, and I don't believe that the Ghost would KO Calzaghe. Your 2nd to last paragraph shows that you have a way too simplistic view on boxing. Slaps have absolutely nothing to do with ruining Kessler - a well thought out gameplan to negate Kesslers' boxing was the answer. A gameplan where JC utilized his speed, and completely changed his way of boxing to suit as a counter to Kessler.
I agree that triangulating opponents does not normally lead to solid analysis. That is not my point. Pavlik is not going to stand there like the proverbial deer in the headlights and wait for Calzaghe to run over him like Kessler did. Pavlik would make Joe work every second of every round. That in itself is not a problem for Joe. The problem comes in with the bad habits I've mentioned many times on numerous threads. I doubt if I need to repeat them here. I've read many of your posts, and so I think you know exacly what I am talking about. Those bad habits get Calzaghe knocked out against Pavlik. Kelly won't lose his Zero to a stand up boxer like Kessler, or a wild man like Calzaghe, or a power house like Miranda. If you're old enough to remember think Danny Lopez vs Salvador Sanchez! Lopez seemed damn near unstoppable at that time, but along came a slick counter puncher with respectable power, and down went Danny. That's the kind of fighter Pavlik needs to be VERY wary of.
And this proves what? Nothing - he got up like always, and owned the fight - this has happen 3 times in his entire pro career. If you think that a solid chin means that they can't hit the canvas, then I suggest you find another sport to match. A weak chin is Jaidon Codrington ie. JCs chin isn't cast iron, but I didn't say this.
Calzaghe fights differently for almost each fight. He can brawl, he can box on the outside - he can mix it up, and like against Lacy he can get in and out very fast. Yes, he is open for the straight right, and he does have a temper(pride) that works for him and against him, but Pavlik would have a very busy night. Pavlik would need to somehow have faster feet than Calzaghe, better upper body movement, and be able to negate Joe's handspeed by in example precision punching, or by holding alot like Hopkins. I do not believe he has those tools... Furthermore - we don't even know how well Pavlik would fare at 168, much less against a speedy fighter that is a light heavy on fight night. I was old enough to see Salvador-Lopez, but I didn't, since I live in a country that doesn't show alot of boxing - and never have. But I can't really see the comparisons? You are referring to a fight that takes place in featherweight, where Lopez being a KO puncher(Pavlik?) lost to a slick boxer like Salvador(Calzaghe?). Nonetheless - Pavlik has to be wary of a boxer, who is more experienced than him, has better boxing skills, better speed of foot and hand, and know how to utilize it; Calzaghe is one as such. JC is no JT who has quite low workrate and is pretty slow on the feet, while a fast hook, which he almost never uses. Kessler-Pavlik would be a closer fight, imho.
that is an accurate analysis of the 2 fighters. pavlik has a chance to win, but calzaghe does have the style to negate pavlik. i would rather see calzaghe take on pavlik than roy jones.
I want to see RJJ-JC for sentimental values, and Pavlik-JC for the reason of curiousity. Having said that - I don't feel that these two fights are the toughest for Calzaghe at this point. Pavlik is still rather young and somewhat inexperienced at the highest level, and Jones seems too old for someone like Calzaghe.
JT was giving him a boxing lesson in the rematch, i fought he won the fight, but even so he did run out of gas
noone is saying pavlik isnt a great fighter, i believe with his power and workrate he could be the next best middleweight for the USA but kessler thus far has clearly achieved more then pavlik, more wins, more defences and he has looked good in many of his fights, i thought he looked great against joe until the last four rounds. so pavlik is going to have to prove all the critics wrong, and if he knocks kessler out, or even wins on points i will be the first to say, hey this pavlik is a great fighter, until then kessler has achieved more and i am giving the edge to him:good
What about Miranda, Zertuche and Zuniga? Miranda is the only name of worth there and he's **** but dangerous. Beating Taylor and then beating him again once you have his card marked does not a top p4p fighter make. At least give him the chance to fight a few more names...
:good So I wasn't the only one who saw it that way. Even though I thought Pavlik just did enough in the end
Pavlik clearly won the fight, but I had it even (five rounds each) going into the 11th round. Pavlik's better stamina won the fight for him, Jermain slowed down toward the end.
