There's a post fight Calzaghe agenda afoot all over this site against the ever present backdrop of a US versus Euro dialogue. Kessler is a critical component in the Calzaghe legend. His abilities are getting played up a bit because the Calzaghe fans are on the warpath against Pavlik. Some of Pavlik's defenders are getting over the top too but all roads lead to Joe until the post fight drama subsides.
its why i did not post much in the run up to the hopkins v calzaghe fight. the nuthugging from both sides had gone to the extreem , making it impossible to read a single well argued and well debated rational thread. i hope it does not happen with pavlik and calzaghe. i beleive when pavlik and calzaghe met personally they got on well respected each other and acted like the grown up men they are. shame it cannot be said of the message boards at the moment.
Pavlik versus Calzaghe could be a mega fight toward the end of 2009 should Joe beat Jones and Pavlik stay active and win a couple of significant bouts. It would be a Hagler-Hearns type of match with equal promotional hype. It should be built up first and would the equal of any major boxing event worldwide.
Ain't that the truth. Plus Americans don't even support their fighters that much and for them to see the rabid Calzaghe support it sort sets them off. We're a miserable lot.
what makes it worse is that kelly pavlik has the most crowd pleasing style of any american boxer i have seen in the last 5 to 10 years from 160 to 199. he is gracious/laid back and does not verbal off or take himself to seriously. combine that with ko power and willingness to walk through walls to try and get the win, he should be and hopefully becomes a mega star. as you said in another thread all the bad v good rubbish getting into boxing at the momemt seems to be something out of the WWF and its bringing WWF type posters it seems whats not to like about kelly pavlik, i dont care where in the world you are from or what colour you are , you should enjoy watching him fight if you are a boxing fan.
I'm not sure why you don't get the comparison between Pavlik and Lopez. Maybe you just never had the privledge of seeing much of Danny. If that's the case, I would suggest you buy a couple DVD's. You'll love it, and trust me, you'll get your moneys worth! Pavlik reminds me ALOT of a Giant-sized "Little Red" Insane work rate, Fantastic stamina, Serious power in both hands, Sometimes throws defense out the window in order to keep moving forward throwing shots, Gets knocked down only to rise up and KO his opponent, Unshakable confidence in his own workrate and power, A humble and genuinely likable fan favorite. Calzaghe isn't anything like Sanchez, and that is part of my point. A Sanchez type fighter would beat Kelly, not a wild herky jerky guy. Salvador was a slick boxer with rock solid fundamentals and very good power. He was also a counter punching machine, and very hard to hit. You would never see Sanchez square up and start slapping, nor would you ever see him rush in with his head down. I think you are a very good poster, but I'm sure we'll continue to disagree until Kelly moves up to 168. Then we may get the chance to see our boys settle it once and for all! Boo
He's got decent attributes like good work rate, good power, good stamina. And all the fights I have seen him in have been exicitng fights so lets get him credit for that. Pavlik's defence is very poor. He has little to no lateral movement. Also ive noted that Pavlik isnt the sharpest knife in the draw. He has no plan B and thats going to be a big problem against an elite fighter. Evidence of this can be seen in the second Taylor fight where when Taylor started to outbox Pavlik, rather than adapt, Pavlik literally just lost rounds - then kept doing the same thing untill Taylor gassed. On the arguement that Pavlik would beat Calzaghe - I really doubt it. Pavlik's style is tailor made for Joe - A come forward fighter with no movement who will stand in front of you without much of a defence. Joe would literally outbox Pavlik all night from the outside much like Taylor did for long periods during the second fight except Joe wouldnt gas out like Taylor did and Joe would also throw more during this time. I also feel if Joe were to get into trouble he could adapt where as im afraid Pavlik cannot - or has not shown in his career than he can at this point. Pavlik vs Winky ? Tbh im not sure. Its hard to tell how much Wright has left . Seeing as we cant judge that from a fight with Hopkins (See Calzaghe vs Hopkins for proof - How can anyone judge a performance level from fighting Hopkins ??!) I feel I need to see him once more before I make an opinion.
