I Can't Believe Manny Steward was touting Lee as a Future Champ!

Vera also beat a world title challenger in Demers..and Mora. Like him or not, Mora has competed at a world class level (splitting a pair with the late Vernon Forrest and drawing with Mosley...faded, but still Mosley).

It isn't even as simple as losing to Vera blacklisting you from world title level..

Andy Lee is wildly inconsistent...sometimes (as we saw versus McEwan) in the course of one evening!

A Lee-Vera rematch right now would be very interesting. With Steward actually present in his corner, it'd be very hard to pick against Lee (since Steward would provide a calming and authoritative voice if he started to drift off into Palookaville).

There were shades of what Steward sees in him evident - and there were also plenty of examples of why it must be such a hair-pulling and frustrating experience for Steward to work with him.

 

I see talent in Lee, but he really comes off as a guy who has bad habits corrected in the gym but continually lapses back in to them in the heat of the battle.

He'd be an extremely frustrating fighter to train because the best of him is seen day in, day out, but there's absolutely no guarantee it'll stick come fight night. I think he's got the potential to be significantly better than he is, but his low ring IQ come fight night leads me to believe we're not likely to see it.

And he still needs to fix his conditioning. His punches were noticeably slower by just the mid rounds, and he was fortunate McEwan gassed worse than he did.

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that he makes all the necessary tweaks (or stems his constant backsliding) enough to succeed at the world level. It just looks to be a major uphill battle at this point, for both him and whoever works his corner.

:good At worst, he's still an entertaining fighter to watch and anyone should respect his desire to give the fans a good show. I'd like to see him fix those issues and pick up an ABC belt (which is about where I see his potential maxing out if he improves), but I'll still tune in when he fights regardless.

Seems like he may just be too set in his ways to adjust like he needs to in order to take the next step unfortunately, but I won't write him off yet.

 

I remember Steward talking about his hand speed. Huh? I didnt see speed at all. No head movement. No defense. He has a good jab, but doesnt really use it. Way too stiff looking. Looks like a poor mans Kessler or something.

C+ or B- fighter at best

 

All I know is, he was taking punishment from some lad I never heard of before.

 

Who was young and undefeated and who's trained under Roach since the start fo his career.
Just because you never heard of him doesnt mean hes not a decent fighter.

 

Against the elite? He was having his ass handed to him by Mcewan the other night before Mc tired and got taken out. The cheese must be slipping off Manny's ******* if he thinks Lee has the tools to be a great fighter.

I can't believe they edited out the word crack er. Guess it must be a racial thing and they are protecting us poor white folks feelings.

 

Lee looked very ordinary on Saturday night but them again everyone in the know predicted that this would be a very tough fight and that it would be close and that's exactly what it turned out to be. Lee struggled against a similar type of fighter - a tall south paw who boxes from the outside, obviously he's used to getting his way most of the time and he seemed all at sea when McEwan would beat him to the jab.

I think McEwan needs to be given credit for getting his fight plan spot on, he was unlucky that he ran out of steam but you have to hand it to Lee for digging deep and getting the KO. I agree that Lee would have got slaughtered by Martinez if he boxed like that but I reckon he would be the first to concede that he wasn't on form.

I think he has more to offer and we've yet to see then best of him. I'd like to see him in against Pavlic or Vera again. In fairness to Lee he was ahead against Vera and the stoppage was premature, Lee actually landed the last punch of the night.

I knew who McEwan was but didn't have him pegged for world class.

He wasn't someone who was supposed to bother Lee anywhere near as much as he did, and certainly wasn't supposed to nearly stop him.

Then again, all of the above applied to Vera...

Lee needs to start living up to his potential or he's going to continue making Steward and lots of us who've seen a good deal of him and claimed him as a budding talent continuously look the fools. :yep

 

Yeah, he had the same attitude in his interview with Kellerman. It's a good attitude for him to have. Humble, and keen on fixing what's wrong.
