I guess it beats no defences in 6 months which is what a lot of other champs seem to manage these days.:good

He took a punt against Martinez where he was expected to get hammered so fair enough he's taking pretty poor defences immediately after.

If he carries on fighting Norwegian dead-wood or Afro-bums then he'll end up getting beat by one of them and wishing he'd given it a go against Fana or one of the top boys in the division.

 Just saying. And Cherry was an easy first defence.

He's racking up a few quick defences now but if he then goes on a run of Fana, Litzau and Tajbert all will be forgotten.

Cherry is a gimme first defense but **** me he is leagues ahead of the likes of Evensen and Laryea.

At least Cherry was an experienced opponent that had faced a lot of good fighters (Ricky Quiles, Jose Armando Santa Cruz, Monty Meza Clay, Paulie Malignaggi, Wes Ferguson, Stevie Johnston) and was always competitive so could at least provide a litmus test of where Tim stood at 140.

If I remember correctly he out on a terrific performance that night and buried any doubt that his win over Witter was a one off and he showed that he was ready for the elite 140lb fighters.

What do victories over Evensen and Laryea prove for Burns, that he is above fringe European and Commonwealth level? And if he does go on a run like that then yes all willl be forgotten but that is hypothetical and we are talking about what is happening right here right now. Let me put it like this, will you be surprised if come July he is out against someone like Innocent Anyanwu http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=328032&cat=boxer with the promise of a big fight after that, what then will you just say that all will be forgotten in the next fight and then say the same when it happens again after that.

I think most people begrudgingly accepted Evensen as a first defence, but this one is an even worse fight.

Still, I would have picked an example that didn't include Edner Cherry to make my point.....;O)

I don't think it is much of a match up but at the end of the day, he is a young guy from a aworking clas background who has been working part time in JJB to makes ends meet. He now has his earning potential multiplied- can you blame him for trying to make a few quid? he doesnt choose his opponents- but his promoter is doing what is best for him.

Why risk it before you have to? of you don't like it then don't watch and don't go to the fight.

This isn't some super rich David Haye taking on a mug, its a guy thats not got 2 bob to rub together trying to earn a bit of cash that will set him up for the future- how can you grudge someone that? would you be different?

I couldn't think of another fighter that won their first title and then defended it against tough opposition and kept their title and improved.

I quite like a first defense like Cherry, he was a real litmus test for the weight and that is what a first defence for a new champion should be if you are looking to give them an easier defense.

At 130 guys like Roberto Arrieta, Miguel Roman, Gamaliel Diaz, Mario Santiago, Martin Honorio, Jorge Lacivera, Levan Kirakosyan etc. would have all been a very good opponent for a first or second defence that would have at least given something to Ricky and his team other then £ in the bank.
