I understand that but seeing as we are the ones buying the fight then we should give at least assess the quality of the fight.

Let me put it like this would you a god awful pair of trainers just because they were Fair Trade? **** no you would probably go for the Nike Trainers that have put 7 Year Old Indonesian Children in slavery conditions to make that trainer for you, why because you like that pair better.

I don't expect him to face Fana, Eloy Perez, Foster Jr back to back but it would have been nice to see him face fighters that at least have a degree of merit at the weight rather then unheralded and undersized prospects. There is taking it easy and then there is taking the ****.

I was hoping a promoter would take Evensen up, he's the kind of fighter I like.

Yeah, I thought he'd do OK at 126 at Euro level and was certainly game enough.

I liked him as well, he was well spoken and he came and gave it his all which is what you hope for with a World Title Challenger.

But the reality is that he was an unproven and untested Featherweight Novice that had no place fighting for a World Title at that weight let alone at one thirty.

But is he going to make anymore money fighting those guys you mentioned? I don't think he will. There is no huge names or massive fights in this division. The people watching Burns are there to see him and aren't bothered about who he is facing at the moment. Not ideal, but thats the way it is.
I usually give a new champ a year before I expect him to start going after the other top dogs. Until then, I say he is okay to earn a few quid. I mean his last fight wasn't near as bad a spectacle as Khan v Salita or Haye v Harrison.

Each to their own I guess, I like Ricky and wish him all the best in his career and I really well and truly hope he makes a good living from Boxing. But I cannot validate a fight like the Laryea one after taking on Evensen, these guys aren't in the Top 50, that is way beyond an easy defence that is a walkover and it is fights like these that have destroyed World Level Boxing.

I'm something of an idealist when it comes to World Level Boxing, when I look back and look at the great fighters who fought at World Level back in the glory days, I feel sad for them because the terminology that they coined such as World Title Challenger and that meant something back then but that has been tainted by fighters that have accomplished 1/10 of what they did getting a world title shot. Due to this they get bracketed together and those terms no longer mean anything.

Good post. I think Boxing fans forget that fighters careers are to better their own lives and not just to serve and please boxing fans.

    You think?:yep:good

I know what your saying mate and I'm just a bit more accepting of the situation. I think if you become too idealistic then you'll probably end up giving up on the sport of boxing altogether!
Take today, Hatton v Alvarez for the lightmiddle belt and that guy Ajose is fighting.:patsch
    Its never ending!

A fight like this would have been a non-title fight yesteryear. I don't see how we can expect terrestrial tv to fall in love with boxing again if this is what's being served in the name of world championship level sport.

Absolutely crap defenses. If you are going to give other world titlists crap for their defenses then Burns should be absolutely **** on. This is absolutely pathetic opposition.

    Their champions you mean?

    He ain't a 'champion', he's a guy who's wearing a shiny belt.

Sooner or later he will have to take a step up, probably in the next 2 fights. So why don't we eiether a) hold off the criticism just now or b) ignore his career and don't watch his fights

Big boxing fan- We don't give Froch **** because he is an exceptional case who takes anyone on
We give Haye and Khan **** because they are financially secure for the rest of their lives, rich beyond our wildest dreams. Yet, they still fight utter diddies- and we have to pay an extra £15 on top of our sky subscriptions for the priveledge.

I've met Burns a good few times, I've trained in his gyms and I am pals with some of his pals and stay near him. Maybe that makes me biased- but it means I can identify with him and he aint doing anything I wouldnt do or 99% of other people wouldn't do- he is trying to get some cash together and probably pay off a mortgage! that's a pretty modest aim in life is it not?

He probably looks at his old training partner Lawrence Murphy who won the WBU belt and then lost it in his next fight- who probably has nothing to show from his boxing career and wants to make the most of his oppurtunity. Riicky is a sensible level headed guy so there is no chance of him following Scott Harrison's path into a Spaniosh jaill and life of alcoholism.
