Both fighters were better at this weight. I'm a big Chavez fan but feel Pea would win even at this weight it would be more competitive and overall a better fight but a competitve decision for Whitaker like 7-5.

Yeah it would be a close natured fight, i thought the actual bout they fought was hotly contested all the way, just that the man i had winning so many of them close but clear rounds was Whittaker, i had it by 8 points in the end.

IMHO, Whitaker makes it look even easier at lightweight than when they met at welter.

 

Whitaker has Chavez' number at any weight, styles make fights. Pea UD at 135, 140 and 147.

 

That imo had as much to do with the fact that Chavez couldn't grind natural welters down with his style as much as it did with him not being suitable to make the weight. Had he Whitaker-like defense, he could have fought comfortably as a welterweight.

In the Whitaker fight though, he wasn't facing a natural welter, he was facing a guy that only a little over a year and a half ago had been a lightweight, and Chavez came in at a very comfortable weight for himself.

What Chavez struggled with is Whitaker's skills, on the inside and out. That remains a hurdle if the fight takes place at 135, 140 or 147.

In their welterweight fight, Whitaker's weight/strength advantage didn't seem so important as his ability to neutralize Chavez's bodyattack, in particular the famed left rip to the body, through his masterly southpaw jab and the crouching style with the elbows tucked in, whilst boxing on the back foot.

 

With all due respect to the topic of your thread, I think Whitaker had his number and wasn't even at his peak form when he actually fought Chavez, whereas Julio was eitther at his peak, or much closer to it for his part.

 

Whilst it clear that 147 is not a weight that suited chavez its also as clear as day to me that whitaker himself was not as good at 147 as he was at 135, a little too flat footed compared to the lightweight version.

I think there fight gave a pretty clear indication of how it would have gone at lightweight, whitaker proved that he could match chavez on the inside and was a better fighter at distance, now pernell at 135 would have been even more dangerous at 135 with the level of movement he could present than he was at 147. And i don't think chavez would have had much better a time on the inside at 135 than he had in there fight.

I'd favour whitaker to win by about 7-5 or 8-4 UD

 

Chavez clearly wasn't at his peak my friend. I'd say that both were past their primes by at least 2 years. Chavez's prime was between 87-90. And Whitaker's was probably between 88-91.
