That's why I ruled him out after you stated the guy you were looking for was only 19 when he beat the 4 Champions.

That's alright, I learn a lot more when I have to do some research.

By the way, I have a Committee meeting tomorrow to pick the 1st ever New York Boxing Hall of Fame Inductees.

So tell us the rest of the story, Biener. What happened to this young sensation?

S,Larry Boardman ,surely was a sensation coming to N.Y.from Conn, where he won 21 out of 22 bouts. He took on the great experienced Sandy Saddler, and beat him in an upset.Boardman who looked somewhat like Carlos Maidana, took early TV by storm, beating 4 champions inside of 9 months,Saddler,Wallace Bud Smith,Paddy DeMarco, and Jimmy Carter.Amazing for an out of town youngster. He was also managed by his dad. He was talked about being the next champ, but it was not to be, and
for whatever reason, started to go downhill. But while he was hot,he was a meteor that burnt out to soon. It happens !

I just got back from the meeting and we can't say anything yet. We will be having a press conference on Tuesday, October 11th and we will announce all the names at that time.

Burt, you forgot Sugar Ray Robinson & Tony Canzoneri.

We picked 8 living boxers, and 5 or 6 boxers that passed away. We also picked non-boxers, living and dead.

Henry Ray Robinson was born in Detroit, Mich.,and Tony Canzoneri came from Slidee, Louisiana. But it is also true that Terry McGovern came from
    Johnstown, Pa.
    What constitutes a New Yorker h ?

New Yorkers will always claim outsiders who do well as their own. Outsiders who migrate to New York and don't do well are outsiders.

Mark Breland should be an inductee for his amateur accomplishments, if nothing else.

That's true but they fought out of New York. Robinson even fought in the New York Golden Gloves. Hagler was born in Newark, but we all know where he fought out of.

If you fought out of New York for most of your prime years, then your good. Everything will come out in October.

I was not the only person on the committee, there were 5 others, so we had to agreed on some.

If a New York Boxing Hall of Fame can't find an initial induction class without jumping a claim on out-of-towers who relocted there -- if there aren't enough ATGs to stock at least the first induction class with true born-and-bred New Yorkers -- then New York boxing is overrated indeed.

Of course a lot of talents migrated there, it had the big arenas and the big money. But you might as well include Jersey Joe, Texas Cobb and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien if you can't find REAL New Yorkers.
