Apparently, Shanon Briggs has now compiled 30 first round KO's and is the all time leader in the heavy weight division for this record. I saw that he tested positive for drugs in a fight that happened as recently as December of '09, which was ruled as a NC, but was originally a first round KO as well.. Nevertheless, he has been talking a lot of smack about fighting the Klits, and with no one else having the guts to get in the ring with them, could he be a possible opponent? Perhaps its the year of the Cannon.
I know their all basically tomato cans, but if we look at most of the people that Dempsey and Buddy Baer stopped in one round, its basically the same calibur of fighter. In my opinion, Mike Tyson's first round KO record is the only one ( or one of the few ) that has any real substance.. Briggs has 30 Tye Fields is like at 27 Dempsey has 25 Baer has 24 Tyson has 22 ( or somewhere close ) Although Tyson only falls around 5 for most first round knockouts, I think his comp is arguably the best with with wins over Spinks, M. Frazier, Williams, Stewart and a few others..
Interesting stuff. How does this top five compare once you include second, and then third round KO's?
Good question. I'd have to look at all five of their records, but I think we can pretty much eliminate Briggs, Fields and Baer. The real contest would be between Tyson and Dempsey.
If Fields is being compared to Briggs and Briggs is being compared to Tyson, let's just admit how massively misleading these stats are.
Was just thinking the same thing. Boxing is definitely a sport where you cannot simply look at someone's record.
This is merely a discussion about numbers, its not intended to compare the greatness of one fighter to another.. Obviously Shannon Briggs, Tye Fields and Buddy Baer have no business being compared to Tyson or Dempsey.
I think they're an interesting stat; they're usually all journeymen and no-hopers, or at least in overwhelming majority, but there's still something impressive about someone that can dispose of such opponents in such numbers and in such a definitive manner. You need the right power, speed, accuracy and intent to do so consistantly.
Oh, I understand, I know you're too smart a poster to do that. But, if you let some of the greats keep going with Shannon's one-rounder level of competition, they'd probably be hitting those kinds of numbers too. Although Briggs may be one of the most dangerous HWs there are in the first 2,3, maybe four rounds, I admit.
Some fun stats from a quick Boxrec trawl. Tyson does indeed have 22, while in comparison Lewis has only 5 first round kayos and Holyfield has never had one at heavyweight (and just two at cruiser). Tommy Morrison has 18. Tua has 16, just two ahead of Rahman with 14. Bruno has 12. Foreman has 15.
Fact is though, even while Briggs parks many stiffs and tomato cans in the first round of a fight, Briggs is still a hardcore puncher if nothing else....... I just wanna see the jive talkin' Briggs train hard and be in around 260 pounds for his proposed meeting with V.K. in Oct...... I'll be stoked just to see 5 to 7 rds of crazy-ass action filled with brawn and power from both men...... Am I asking too much here? MR.BILL
