I don't believe that Benavidez is a weight bully.

And even with diuretics aside, many fighters just prefer to fight at a more natural weight and dont really consider killing themselves for weeks just to have a size advantage.

Then you have fighters whose training camp is primarily killing themselves to make a weight they shouldnt really be at.

It's not the fighter's fault, they are not committing any infractions by cutting weight.

It sounds like some people are sour because some fighters are able to cut more weight than others, because they ALL cut weight.

Even though people mock David for his 'dad body' in reality he has a perfect fighting physique, being tall with very lean muscle mass, which is how he can maintain his cardio and speed so well, plus he has naturally heavy hands and knows how to leverage them, which makes him such a dangerous fighter.

I don’t really understand criticising ‘weight bullies’ given that pretty much everyone does it, and to not do it would be somewhere between unprofessional and deliberately shooting yourself in the foot (or, you genuinely believe that fighting closer to your natural weight actually gives you an advantage).

I do however understand ACKNOWLEDGING when one guy is bigger than the other, as a relevant factor in evaluating a fight. However, even this tends to be done in a completely erratic and inconsistent way by fans. Most of the time the people complaining have literally zero idea whether someone is a weight bully and are basing their theory entirely on the body type of the fighter. There are all sorts of reasons why a certain body type might give you the illusion that someone is ‘bigger’ than someone they weigh the same as.

Benavidez seems to have that tall, skinny fat chicken leg body like Bellew and Fury, who also seemed to weigh a lot less than they appear (“huge” Fury even at like 245lbs still looks like a 300lb fatso).

    Agreed.

And beyond that, there is a flip side to that coin that is often ignored - namely, cutting too much weight too quickly can have detrimental effects. It is not some magical automatic advantage that many make it out to be.

Personally, I'd prefer same day weigh-in myself. But that ain't the rules, and those old rules are never likely to return.

This is kinda how I feel about it. I mean sure, I give the side eye to the occasional fighter who looks a bit big for the division (Zurdo is the biggest example off the top of my head), but if they can make weight, it is what it is. Not like the other guy doesn't know it's happening when they sign.

That said, I wasn't a fan at all of what Charlo did last night. Setting a catchweight to keep his strap from being on the line and couldn't even be bothered to meet that. Then again I'm sure Benavidez didn't mind since he got a significant bonus per pound over the limit. Hell, if I were him I'd have been taking big Charlo to a buffet the night before

People have different definitions of weight bully. The important thing here is that being heavier with a heavier frame at the same weight class can give an illusion of skill, so it's not as simple as just making weight. Classic saying, two guys of same skill, the bigger guy wins more often than not.

Have always maintained Spence as one of these people. Look at what happened when he ran into someone as big as him but more athletic and skilled.

There are boxers that spend a large portion of their career beating down on smaller men, but skills are what pays the bills when they fight larger boxers

So when do we choose who is drained and who is weight bullying? When it suits us?

It's actually Victor Conte who said Boo Boo (who has been a SNAC fighter for a long time) was 190lbs. I watched a Boo Boo interview recently and when he was asked about why he moved up from 154 to 160 and then again from 160 to 168 he replied that it was because of difficulty making those weights.

I know Benavidez came in at like 194 once IIRC, against Angulo I think, but he missed weight for that fight by a few pounds and I think he was 184 for Lemieux.

So Benavidez might have weighed significantly less than Boo Boo albeit he's the naturally bigger man. I did say I was shocked at how big Boo Boo looked when he first flashed his new 168 pound physique some months back but it's hard to believe, judging from how he looked at the weigh in, that he still had 22lbs to rehydrate. I don't recall him looking I'll or drained or anything. Compare how he looks to how Haney and to a lesser extent Teofimo looked on the scales at 135 and he looked healthy. It goes to show you what massive weight bullies they were, especially Haney, because they looked like a different species on the scales and not living ones either.

Victor Conte a lame just one look at him would tell you he's a conniving scoundrel.

Now all he needs to do is grow a mustache & swirl it around, the dude would have done great playing Matilda's dad in the movie replacing Danny Devito hahaha.

Depending on who the fighter is. Hopkins was never called a weight bully. His best wins at 160 were Ocar and Tito. But as you said, he was disciplined and dedicated. When it comes the a fighter someone doesn’t like, it’s weight bullying.
