USA Today published an article about Adonis Stevenson on the second and in the article they talk about his status as a bit of a "ducker." Now before we get into it I should state that I like Stevenson, but he his past few fights he could be accused of taking it a bit easier.

Anyway here's an excerpt from the article:

"I never ducked anybody. I'm ready to fight anybody," he told USA TODAY Sports by phone this week.

"I don't pick opponents. I let my manager (Al Haymon) and my team take care of that. My job is to go in the ring and beat everybody and knock everybody out."

To me when a boxer states that they don't pick their own fights it just makes them sound like a child looking for an excuse. He's the champion and if he went in and said I want Kovalev he could make it happen. It just seems like an easy excuse not to fight anyone you don't want to. I've heard a lot of boxers say similar things in the past and was curious what people thought of the line.

Some just trust their management more to look after the business end, and not fighting Kovalev just as soon as the fans wanted him to just might have been a good decision from a financial standpoint. I don't believe that fight would have been bigger before Kovalev shut out Hopkins. As long as they both keep on winning the demand for that fight will only increase. Of course I'd like to see this fight right now, but I think they know what they're doing.

Someone a while ago posted the details of a Al Haymon contract and based on that the fighter basically gives up all control of their career, so in this case Stevenson is right. Even if he wanted to fight Kovalev or anyone else, if Haymon doesn't want that fight, their isn't a thing he could do about it because he has been willing to give up all right to the direction of their career, which is quite frankly stupid. What if you your manager wanted to just side line you for years so they could cash out on another fighter they control in the division? King used to do this all the time, sign a fighter and then that fighter barely fights and is frozen out.

It shows he's not only a coward but also a coward who can't even stand behind his cowardice by putting the blame on others. That's as low as it gets.

Most of these fighters are not smart enough to handle the business end. It may look like and even be a direct duck at times, but every boxer is trying to make it to the top. Its all about management of risk reward, and some trust their people to handle that.

I can't stand this excuse and feel like if guy's demanded fight's we'd get them. Sadly most fighters are content with sitting back and basically ducking out.

This isn't just a Haymon created thing it's everybody GBP, Top Rank. How many guys pick there fight's Mayweather, Canelo and who....

There's truth and lies in it. I would hope your manager gives you the choice of more than one opponent of which you would then pick one. Although, he does have vested interest in seeing you win, so if there's an opponent out there he believes you can't beat, you best believe his name won't be on your list of opponents to choose from.

Haymon may just be the fans worst manager, but he is definitely the fighters favorite manager. You don't hear not one fighter complaining about Haymon or trying to get out of their contracts. He seems to have the fighters best interest in mind with maximizing the money to risk ratio.

They all pay homage to him and thank him before they thank God, their trainers or families after each victory in post interviews.

I think it's written in their contracts.

What's worse is this guy never makes any public appearences, he's content to remain hidden in the shadows.

He's the Suge Knight of boxing, you don't want your manager all on stage taking your spot light. You don't want Bob Arum, Oscar De La Hoya doing interviews talking crazy on your behalf. Do you want to get paid and take the easiest best fights for you? Come sign with Al Haymon, you just have to praise and thank me first.

If two guys haven't fought, and neither side's promoter has put a reasonable offer on the table to make the fight, there's no ducking involved ... unless you want to say both guys are ducking.

If Kovalev's promoter truly wants to make a fight with Stevenson, they'll make a huge offer. If it isn't accepted, then you can talk about ducking.
