Man, the finish last night was so beautiful. I just watched it again. Hook to the body followed by a knee to the head. I recall Jones pointing out that a big hole in Shogun's defense was that he left his body exposed in favor of protecting his head, and he exploited that hole beautifully last night. It shows that he really knows his opponents before stepping into the cage with them.
I can't watch it again. That fight hurt. It was like watching Holmes beat up Ali. Just painful to watch.
Sad to see Shogun tap as well... I really like Jones but I will wait too see how he reacts when tagged solid on the chin before I declare him the #1 PFP
He is in the same situation as GSP, Silva, Machida etc Some fall, some don't, some do and some get back on the horse. Silva hasn't fallen, GSP has but got back on the horse, Machida has fallen and yet to get back up. Jones has many serious challenges to overcome - Evans himself has sparred with him, has good wrestling, decent speak and a knockout punch. Machida has excellent striking and a good tdd. There are serious threats out there.
Like Machida, everyone will be gunning for Jones. He is the target, they will start training their wrestling etc now. Just like they were watching Machida to try and out do his striking. It is up to Jones to keep evolving and improving his stand up etc
This is key, age is literally a number. Look at Nogueira only 33 yet looks early 40s and fights like one now
As for beating Jones, as I posted in another thread the only guys I see troubling him are Ricardo Arona and (srs) Rousimar Palhares.
My advice to any fighter at 205 would be either move up to HW or down to MW and don't come back untill John Jones has retired.
My bro in law pointed out something important last night. Not only is Jones biologically superior, he seems to be the smartest guy out there as well. To give an example, just when everyone of us is complaining about fighters not fighting anyone they had a beer with. Jones shatters that taboo and firmly opened himseld up to fight anyone. Now thats a professional. Hes 23.
People need to be realistic, Rampage, Machida and Rua were all touted as unbeatable etc when they won the title. You have to give Jones time, now is the man, but will he still have the hunger to carry on improving, carry on training hard or will the hot women, the fame, the money, the lifestyle effect all this. Jon we have a commercial at 3pm, your gonna make 50 thousand....whereas before he would have been training instead of doing some form of PR. Thats an example but like I said, at the moment he has had only 14 fights, and only one real top 10 fighter.....you could count Bader but still.
