Johnson is a pressure fighter. Kessler is a counter puncher. Kessler would sit back and get picked apart by a better, faster, counter puncher. Easy fight to call, imo.
so how come before the calzaghe fight, hopkins was in a lot of peoples top 5 p4p and johnson was in most peoples top 300
Well first off many had him lower in the top 10, but to answer your question: Hops came up from 160 and beat Tarver who was (recognized by some as) LHW champ. That launched him into the P4P ranks again, after the Taylor fights. When Johnson beat Tarver, it was one LHW beating another, and he was not launched into the top 5 P4P, most people had him in the top 15-20 after that fight. But both essentially beat the same fighter, despite being rewarded differently. So P4P ratings are a bit different than head-to-head ratings.
A lot of things affected Dawson in his fight against Johnson. For one the switch in trainers affected him, two the seven month layoff, and three Glen Johnson was the first boxer to ever pressure Dawson. Dawson for the first time fought an opponent who actually fought back every round, Adamek never fought back at Dawson until rounds 10-12, so you can say this was also the first time Dawson was ever tested. And he handled it pretty well, although he could of fought better. I believe if Floyd Mayweather Sr was still his trainer he would of won against Johnson more convincingly. None the less this gives a good assessment in what Dawson needs to improve on. We have yet to see the best of Chad Dawson and I believe will see a major improvement in his next fight. Dawson is the type of fighter that needs a trainer that can help him improve on his basic defense fundamentals, we all saw Dawson's talent when he was with a top notch trainer. (I still don't know he dropped Floyd Mayweather Sr) A trainer like Emmanuel Steward, Buddy McGirt, Freddie Roach, and Jeff Mayweather would do very well with Dawson.
I don't see Dawson fighting Calzaghe ever, but I think Calzaghe would win. People should worry about Dawson with Tarver, I know Woods didn't show up, but I have this sneaky feeling that Tarver still has something left. I hope not, I really hate Tarver!
Hopkins and Dawson are in two differrent leagues ... Hopkins is a legend, but Dawson is the future of the LHW division. At 25, he's just filling out of his frame and is fast as hell. The power is evident and the skill is there as well ... Calzaghe couldn't handle Dawson for 12 rounds ...
That's funny! Echoes of the Kessler fight and the Lacy fight! Nobody seems to get this, Calzaghe will lose when someone decides that they are going to out work him! Haven't seen anyone whose been able to do it! Dawson couldn't out work Johnson, he won't out work Calzaghe!
Calzaghe's work rate is good, but its not going to work against all elite level fighters. Dawson is 6'3 and is filling out his frame ... His ability to throw fast, straight punches will play a key part ... in this situation Calzaghe's not going to be able to overwhelm him. Add to that Dawson is a southpaw as well ... I'm not going to discredit Calzaghe for his most recent victories but you can't base every potential fight on past fights. Dawson did a good job of beating Johnson to the punch, it was just that Johnson is very relentless and has a very good chin. Dawson showed his speed and his youth in that fight ... he wasn't all busted up like most said ... after his heart rate went down and his adrinaline stopped then he began to swell but nothing more nothing less. It was a good test and by far a harder test than any young boxer i've seen has been through - since PBF fought Castillo
I never heard it was robbery for Johnson just a fight that could go either way! But if you think Calzaghe doesn't have the chin that Johnson does or isn't more relentless than Johnson than you're a little skewed. Also, Calzaghe is more crafty than Johnson on top of this, I think that would be enough to put Calzaghe over the top on points! I'd say 115-113. At 36 Calzaghe aint the fighter i'd want to be, but the man finds ways to win, and he would beat Dawson.
