Jesus... he's had 20 fights and has looked as good as one should expect w/ his level of comp. And fighting for another belt in his second division. Does he have Floyd Mayweather hand speed? No, but he's hardly slow. Does he have Mike Tyson power? No. But he's not feather fisted. He's been winning in the manner you'd expect an elite to do with the same comp. If 'hype' is your biggest problem with Stevenson, the problem is you....
Agreed. Also let's define "hype" here too. People in the boxing community are high on this kid. It's not like any general sports fan/mma fan or even casual boxing fan even knows who this kid is. I don't know why guys get so offended about what other people think of fighters. Like, why do you care what someone else thinks? There aren't enough pro boxers getting hyped these days. As a boxing community you'd think this Jake Paul embarassment would be the bigger issue. Guys like Shakur and every other dedicated pro fighter have to work hard to get even a tiny paycheck yet this fool has done nothing but PPV and got HANDILY beat by the first "pro" boxer he fought that most of us think isn't any good either.
It's as if some up and comer, or even just a regular fighter isn't allowed to have vocal fans unless they are a 3 time World champ. And worse thing is, a lot of these guys only follow world champs. Pretty much bangwagoners.
He is clearly talented, its just that his style is not enjoyable at all to watch. Slightly more entertaining than haney but still a bore. To be fair, he has shown recently that he's at least trying to be more aggressive and force stoppages. That is respectable.
If no fighter ever had hype the sport would be dead. Let's pretend the only fighter ever to get hype was SRR. OK, well then it's logical to ask "Who did he fight?" Oh, no one I have heard of? They must be bums.
My analysis: I think Stevenson will win the title easily tonight. Santos is a tremendous athlete and has beautiful punching form, but his skills are lacklustre. He has little punch variety and makes use of his abnormal explosiveness to hit opponents who stand on the centerline staring at him with the 1-2 over and over. He couldn't cut off the ring vs whoever the last guy he fought was, so despite his power/speed edge, he's not putting Stevenson on the ropes. Shakur will be consistently moving around and in and out in the middle of the ring, and Santos doesn't have the footwork to deal with that. Shakur might even KO Santos if Santos begins becoming frustrated and throwing his cross recklessly in desperation. I think Shakur is the best at 135 and will not struggle much until he faces another elite 135er.
De Los Santos is more than an 8-1 underdog Stevenson is supposed to dominate him. Agreed about his other wins there is nobody above B level on his resume. Stevenson dwarfs these guys as well and still can't put a dent in them. He is not built for war. People who think he is the second coming of Floyd are clueless. Floyd only fought safety first when he was at a size disadvantage and when he was terrified against Pacquiao. Shakur won't be able to make 135 for too long and he doesn't have enough power to hurt guys his own size.
I live in Vegas and sometimes gets free tickets to fights, if I’m available I love to go. I got offered tickets to his fight tonight and although I have nothing to do, I still have zero interest to go… That’s what I think of Shakur.
To a certain extent, I do agree. But at the same time, if we're speaking from a P4P skill standpoint, I think he picks everyone apart, including Crawford, Ennis, Loma, Usyk, Canelo...etc.
Whose saying that Jake Paul is not the bigger issue? In fact Stevenson is not an issue at all at least he is a legit top pro we are just saying he is overrated. If you disagree that's fine but no need to get on your high horse. Jake Paul is a POS who is making a mockery of all combat sports but that's a whole different topic.
Diffrent perspectives. The guy gets excited when Shakur fights. You want to watch fights that are exciting.
My "high horse"? OK whatever. You say overrated but by WHO?? 5 or 6 people on this internet forum? One or two "boxing writers"? How many people out there are singing his name from the rooftops? How many are calling him a first ballot HOF? He is clearly highly talented. You'd have to be a moron not to see it. I see people recognizing his talent and surmising he could be the cream of the division and that people believe he could be successful moving up in weight and being a multiple division champ possibly beating some of the big names there. All of that is plausible and that isn't enough to call him overrated. Yeah you also get a COUPLE nutriders anointing him the next GOAT but that is a very small minority made up of troll type posters and they exist for a lot of fighters.
