He faces a bunch of cab drivers and journeymen when he's coming up and look great. Amazing hand speed, good power, etc. He's ESPN's 2011 prospect of the year. But he doesn't step up. THEN he steps up against one of the highest risk, lowest reward fighters in the sport: Lomachenko. This is like not fighting the beatable names in your division then signing to fight Rigo. Loma had a name among hardcore fans but was an absolute nobody in the pop boxing scene. He signed up for what the bookies had a 50-50 fight against a guy who is 1-1 and can't speak English. What the hell? NOW since losing to Loma, he's gone back to fighting C level fighters. Is he waiting for some high quality, unknown Cuban to surface?
He beat Jhonny Gonzalez who is a risk to anyone. But yeah, he looks like he's backsliding again. He needs to get Selby and Cruz-Frampton winner. Russell Jr took the Loma fight because he didn't think Loma had power and to take advantage of Loma's inexperience. It backfired and Russell Jr was ready to be KO'd at the end of the 12th.
For some reason it seems he can't make a decent fight happen, He says he wants Selby and Santa Cruz. Haven't heard anything from Selby, and Santa Cruz is busy at the moment. However he should stay within that top ten opponent list. Fighting anyone outside of that is ridiculous to me. Mares is injured but Valdez or Cuellar would be great fights.
His career has been mismanaged no doubt. I thought he finally had some momentum after beating Gonzalez but he hasn't done **** since. It's a shame because he has explosive speed going to waste. Sent from my SM-G925T using Tapatalk
