I don't understand why Hopkins wants Calzaghe do badly.

Hopkins ain't stopping ****. He didn't even try first time, when he saw Calzaghe was still strong. He hit Pavlik with the kitchen sink. If Hopkins goes in there thinking about a KO, and being more aggressive, I think that helps Calzaghe. It gives him far more opportunities to use his handspeed to land cleaner shots than he did first time.

People seem to assume Hopkins can adapt, whats to say Calzaghe does not? Calzaghe is smart too. I think its just as likely Calzaghe doesn't even get dropped second time. He never got close to being dropped after round 1, once he figured Hopkins out. He knows Hopkins this time, no element of surprise.

Technically, he almost went down right at the end of one round (maybe the third or fourth?) but your sentiment is right. Calzaghe would know in advance that Hopkins is an opportunist who he wouldn't give the opportunity to next time.

  3. If Hopkins fights similar (the only way he can win - but cant win (oxymoron i know) - then the fight will end as a close ud for joe - especially in wales.

if hopkins opens up joe will beat him to the punch and hopkins will be exhausted - it's easy to open up and fight for 12 rounds when your opponent has maybe 3/4 different offensive moves - and all of them are slow, straight and send an RSVP 2 seconds before it happens. Calzaghe will punch from every angle, and move out again - joe fights far better when the other guy comes to him - both bhop and roy didnt do that.

  4. Don't lose sight of the fact that for those casual fans watching in the US, Calzaghe looked untalented and unimpressive. Nobody came away with any recognition of him as a great athlete. Far from it. He looked to be charging forward causing a lot of the collisions because he couldn't control the distance and threw uncoordinated awkward slapping girl punches like a rank amateur.

i agree. no one matches joe in punch output, but B-hop being a great counter puncher, would want to capitalize more on being on the offense and land cleaner shots the second time around. joe got put down by an ancient rjj and both b-hop and rjj are not considered huge punchers. i think b-hop that beat pavlik beats joe the 2nd time around.

  10. Here let me fix that last sentence for ya ...

Calzaghe would know in advance that Hopkins is the more talented fighter so he wouldn't dare give him that opportunity again. You don't get a "O" taking risks.

If you replace the word "fighter" for the word "actor" then you may have a point.

He only lost the first fight by two rounds on my card (and there were quite a few swing rounds really). It's not like he got blown out and it's not like the disparity is so great that with a few subtle changes he can't turn things in his favor.

I think he senses a slide in Calzaghe and of all the potential fights out there, this is the most lucrative outside of a fight with Jermaine Taylor. 'Specifically if the fight goes down in Wales (or Whales if you're an idget).

If I replace the word "Calzaghe" with "The Welsh Sillynanny" then I get an extra point.
