Hyped up paper champion that held on to the belt and got paid ridiculous amounts of money to fight bums. Berto is a prime example of everything that is wrong with boxing. On top of that he is an *******. All that **** he was talking to Mosley when in reality he isn't worthy to mend Shane's shoe laces.

I for one am glad Ortiz whooped his ass and i hope he never gets a main event slot again.

Yeah. He will get the IBF belt and go on another pointless run. But at least no body cares about the IBF belt

He did get a lot of undeserved paydays, but you can't blame him for taking them. Blame Al Haymon and HBO for that. Berto's been willing to take on bigger challenges, as he proved when he signed to fight Mosley back when Shane was still the legitimate welterweight champion. And much of the same criticisms had been levelled at Ortiz before the fight.

Just a touch harsh, good riddance?

There are guys in this sport who don't deserve a payday, or main event more than Berto. Like someone has already stated, Berto HAD signed to fight Mosley, a Mosley who had just destroyed Margarito. He's not as bad as people make out, and if he can fight his way back in to contention...why not?

Very true words.Berto can't draw flies but his "management" must have pictures of HBO exec's to get such exposure.Berto is basically ****ed now and nobody cares for this dude.

HBO was obviously overpaying Berto and approving opponents for him that should have never been approved. Hopefully, this time around, HBO makes him earn his paydays and appearances. He's a solid fighter and can make for good fights but HBO needs to insist on a higher standard if they are going to put Berto back on the network.

stupid thread. The guy has a lot of talent, is young and still developing, and remains near the top of the division. Not to mention, his war with Ortiz was a classic.

    So, in closing, GFY.

HBO overpaid him, but that's not his fault. Hate HBO, not Berto.

Good riddance to a guy that was in most likely the FOTY? Are you ****ing joking? Sounds like a personal beef. The kid had a belt and got paid what the market would bear. He lost to Ortiz but never gave up and that was a great fight, I would never say good riddance to a guy that shows that kind of heart in the ring, I want to see more. To me he proved in his last fight he is a tough fighter and deserved to wear a belt, he gained more respect in losing and he deserves to be in big fights still no doubt.

Obviously this thread will get alot of hate.
But Berto is one of the most ovverated champions in recent time, he has disgracefull handspeed for a world champion, doesnt even look in shape, horrendous footwork, no tactical gameplan, and his list of opponents have been dreadful for a guy who was being considered as one of the best fighters in the future

I dont want to hate, but he doesnt have much heart either, hes tough but he has no heart. He fought shitty against Ortiz, standing against the corner hoping that Ortiz will punch himself out instead of actually trying to box and find ways to dismantle Ortiz. Of course Ortiz got knocked down, his style is tailor made for him to get hit and Berto has some degree of power so I wasnt suprised that Ortiz got knocked down
The fight was also not as "classic" as people say, Ortiz clearly won the fight

I agree completely. the ortiz fight was seen as another routine fight for him against a fighter who was considered to have lost his edge and some1 moving up from 140, he was exposed pretty badly. i think ortiz is a hell of a fighter but when you take into consideration the circumstances he was seen as cannon fodder to build up berto, put it this way berto had about 5 defences of his title atleast 2 of those guys he fought were natural 140lb fighters, quintana was shot, freddy harnadez wasn't even a top 10 opponent and allot of ppl felt callazo beat him he was a paper champ, i only wish shane would have fought him last year because he would have been blitzed
