This is a good Heavyweight era. Far better than its been in a while

 

What sports have suddenly popped up in the last twenty years to supply new options? Hate to tell you this but the best athletes have never been boxers. Jim Brown was a better athlete than any boxer, ever. It isn't even close either.

 

I never claimed boxers achieve the peak of human athleticism.

As far as I understand NBA and NFL have pensions and health insurances, which are much more appealing than what boxing offer at lower risk (though still notable in case of NFL.)

 

The NFL, MLB, and NHL have been around since before anyone on this forum was born and have been better options for at least half a century. The NBA started in 1946, but has been a better option for a half century too.

Cultural and economical landscape was entirely different in the period of time spanning from the beginning of the century through the Vietnam war and into the 70s. Infinitely larger cultural impact of boxing (ranging from early racial supremacy, to international politics during the WWII, and domestic political landscape in the 60's with Ali and Frazier) and less opportunites for the blacks combined with hero worship of the great fighters meant they flocked to the fighting game. Klitschkos era saw a clear shift from USA as the Mecca of boxing, to a more global landscape which would theoretically mean greater talent pool (which happened to an extent with the likes of Golovkin, Usyk, Klitschkos, Lomachenko etc) but it also overlapped with the dissolution of boxing's former cultural authority, dividing politics of the multiple sanctioning bodies, and the likes (obviously to a degree replaced by new ones.)

Roughly speaking, in spite of potential greatness of some of our contemporary ATG (Inoue, Ioka, Usyk, Lomachenko) it's impossible to argue boxing has or ever again will have the influence it had in the past. In absence of such, NBA and NFL being a very competitive or outright superior financial options with great retirement and health plans are likely another reason as to why the big, talented guys are somewhere else, at least in America. You could probably stack the division with decent Euro guys but nobody would pay to see them.

 

I always thought hw should have a limit. 220-240. At least they need to make weight and train to do so. Just like I don't want to watch little people fighting, I don't care to watch these giants that gas out after 5-6 rounds fight either.
