I think this number is a general indication of the level of overall popularity of the sport at the moment. Sadly, the outcome of the fight itself and the nature of the fight won't help this one bit. I'm sure most viewers were thoroghly underwhelmed.
I wouldn't say a lot more. I think I can be quoted on ESB thinking the fight would do 1.4 million buys. Shane isn't a huge draw but he can sell some tickets. People knew he was 38 and didn't really have a chance for this fight to go to the cards and him win it. Floyd himself is good for close to a million buys but he needs another big name for him to do over a million five. Hatton isn't huge in the US but he was in the UK and Mayweather played the villain well when he was over there that is why they did about 1.7 million buys combined and of course Oscar created a large buzz for the 2.4. Pacquiao gains fans every fight he is in. About half the people in the US bought the fight just because of his name for the Hatton and Cotto fights. For the Clottey fight nearly all 700k buys were bought just to see him fight. Pacquiao/Mayweather still does well over 2 million buys. It takes 2 to tango like Floyd has said in the past. :yep I am guessing Mayweather/Pacquiao would do 2.7 million buys and nothing less than 50% for each fighter.
Someone posted a week before the fight that they were expecting around 2 million buys. I didn't believe it. I just didn't feel any momentum towards the fight. Not too many fans were getting on ESB, not too much advertising, and then you had some mishaps before the fight such as the Valero incident. I think a lot of people were initially excited about the fight, but then backed off at the last minute from buying it.
