I fear Father Time may defeat JMM and B-Hop within a month...

Now don't get me wrong here...

The Bernard Hopkins of 2008 who destroyed Kelly Pavlik would DOMINATE Jean Pascal,

    and

The Juan Manuel Marquez of 2008 who bludgeoned Joel Casamayor would STOP Michael Katsidis,

but two years on neither fighter looks quite the same to me.

And they are both facing younger, fresher, stronger, highly motivated opponents coming off great victories.

The Jones fight tells me that Hopkins no longer has the stamina to compete for 12 rounds with a lively opponent, because he was struggling for energy against a horribly, horribly shot-to-**** RJJ who was in survival mode throughout.

Both Diaz fights tell me a couple of things about Marquez. They tell me that he is not a natural lightweight, because in the first fight Diaz's physicality caused Marquez all sorts of problems, despite Diaz being a thoroughly mediocre boxer nowhere near Marquez's level of class or ability. The second fight showed that JMM may no longer have the relentlessness or explosiveness to close the gap and finish the job against a bigger yet inferior opponent who uses his size advantages.

I very much hope that I am wrong, but I fear we may see two more examples of the young lion finally putting the old great to the sword, much like Juan Manuel Lopez recently did to Rafael Marquez.

I believe Pascal becomes the first man in 17 years to clearly and decisively beat Hopkins, on a comfortable UD.

I believe Katsidis may cause a sensation by forcing a TKO in the mid-late rounds vs JMM.

I very much hope I am wrong on both counts, but this is what I think is going to happen. What do you guys think?

The more I think about it, the more I think Katsidis will pull off the victory. Although Katsidis can be hurt and stopped, Marquez is good enough to make him walk onto big shots. I don't believe Katsidis should adopt the more patient approach he used against Mitchell...his best chance in my opinion is to try and steamroll Marquez like Diaz tried in the first bout, and succeeded at times.

Pascal has to be favourite, but I wouldn't bet against Hopkins.

These are the results for the weekend.

    Abraham KO Froch.

    Marquez KO Katsidis.

Also Bernard Hopkins beats Pascal via UD later this year.

I think there's a fair chance they could both lose.

JMM isn't a natural lightweight, we all know that, and if Katsidis can apply the kind of pressure Diaz did in his first effort with Marquez, there's an excellent chance he could win. He hits much, much harder than Diaz and Juan could struggle if he takes too many bombs.

I still think Marquez will do it. I think his jab will cause Katsidis all kind of problems and he has a tremendous aptitude to stay calm in they eye of the storm. Even if Katsidis can get inside and land his big shots, Juan can catch him with sharp counters and combinations.

I actually hope Hopkins loses. I've nothing against him but a victory for him would leave the division stagnant. There's no chance he's going to fight the likes of Cloud, Dawson and Shumenov. A Pascal win lines up a number of good fights with other young, exciting fighters.

I think Pascal should be quick enough to land some flashy (not necessarily effective) combinations to earn a clear, competative victory.

Father time is one mean mofo...
He has a classic left hook and a timeless jab, but it's his perfect timing that makes him so dangerous. Look what he did to Ali and RJJ :deal

The first Diaz fight was a bit troubling since he showed he was hittable and struggled with pressure early on in the fight for JMM, and Katsidis has more power. Diaz however, as irrelevant as people consider him now, is a better boxer than Katsidis and has a better defense when coming forward. I'm not sure if Katsidis can absorb the same amount of punishment. He has all the heart in the world, but I'm not sure he can simply walk into counters and brush them off. I think Marquez has enough to get the win. His reflexes may have declined, but his technical abilities and style allow him to last a bit longer.

The Hopkins fight is really more interesting and ambiguous because of styles. Hopkins isn't the busiest fighter, and Pascal fights in bursts which may overwhelm the crafty defense of Bernard. At the same time Pascal isn't the most sound boxer and could fall victim to Hopkins setting the pace with his short shots and efficient offense throwing him off. This bet I wouldn't touch.

  12. JMM- I dont think so yet.

BHOP- I would put money on a legends time being up.

How do you know that the Hopkins that dominated Pavlik in 2008 would dominate Pascal? bull****! Pascal would give him a harder fight than Taylor did in 2005. Pascal's style is more similar to Taylor's than to Pavlik's.

    nah....
Hopkins would struggle with Pascal at any point in his career.
Remember, Hopkins fought a Pavlik who thought it wise to jump two weight classes and fight while sick.
But regardless - you sound silly for even referencing the Pavlik fight because it's not like Pascal and Pavlik have much similarity in their style anyway.

I agree with you that Pascal's and Pavlik's style are very different.
But, I don't think there's much comparison with Taylor either.
Pascal will be on the perimeter and then explode at his opponent, landing hard shots and then jump back out. If there's any style it's like.... I'd say Roy Jones.
