I joined a gym back in November. Started sparring middle of January. Now, I know this is a sport that takes awhile to learn, but months in, my defense is still brutal and I still can't connect on even a 1-2 in sparring. My jab is goodand my conditioning has improved but my defense is still terrible and my coach has still yet to really help me with it as he knows I struggle with it. We really only did mitts a couple times and I feel im not getting as much 1on1 as I should as he told me a bunch of times things he'll help me on. I feel often im just being thrown into the ring sparring and past few sessions i've been like a punching bag, one time against a guy who I hung with beforehand. My coach even put me into the ring with two recent pros (both were lighter than me, but still..I was a fish out of water and took some hits despite them being told to go light). I don't know what to do. Im going to say something to my coach today because my confidence is shot and im hesitant in the ring because my defense is so bad. I've told him this before too. I think what is best for me is too take a week off from sparring and work on technique. I can't keep getting in the ring looking defenseless and taking shots to the head/body continously.

Find a new coach, if he knows your liabilities and isnt looking to improve them at all hes not the right coach for you.. hes just using u as a punching bag for other guys happens far too often

Sounds like you're being used as cannon fodder by your coach. Tell him how you feel about your training and how you're being treated. If he acts like a dick change gyms.

Thing is, he likes me, and keeps talking about my potential (im sure every coach says this lol). When im in the ring he'll give advice as I go, but im still not getting much 1on1. He seems me struggling in the ring defensively yet hasn't really helped me with it. My confidence is shot right now. I'm hesitant to throw anything more than 1 punch. My defense is so bad it's that I KNOW im just going to get hit. I'm pretty sure I haven't thrown one clean punch yet without being countered.

He asked me to come to a different gym with some gym guys last week to spar and I agreed. Ifind out im sparring against a middle weight and light heavy (who was overweight at time) two who just turned pro. My jaw dropped. Im not scarred of anybody, but jeez. I was clueless in the ring. One of them started right on top of me bullying me and my coach is yelling at me to keep him away with jab as im tall (im a HW too). He told me after we got work to do and I felt like saying "ya think?"

Your not listening to what we said you are just responding with preconceived notions... actually read what virus and I told you then respond

What do you mean by "cannon fodder"? I'll be saying something today about confidence and such, but what exactly should i say?

You are basically one of those shitty teams in college football that has no chance to beat one of the top 20 schools. You are only there as someone to "practice" against, to build the other schools confidence, increasing their chances of beating another top 20 school.

The difference is they are being paid huge amounts of money to take these beatings.

That is what they mean by cannon fodder; if you are indeed being used for cannon fodder.

    This.

You know this from your initial post yet you continue to train with this *****. You're a tool for the guys at your gym, I don't mean that in an offensive way, I mean literally.

    True.

I guess its in every coach to tell guys how they have all this potential then lol. Thanks guys, I'll be saying something today. If nothing changes, i'd feel disloyal, but I may look for another gym.

You are starting out in boxing. you need to learn how to survive in a boxing ring. Once you can survive other things will come to you. Defense is not rocket science. Keep your chin tucked and your hands up and use some good movement. Boxing takes time and all you need is some space and you can shadow box and slowly you will start seeing smoother punches and better footwork. I would learn how to throw a Jab. And only throw that jab for a month.

RML, definitely have the words with your coach. He should know what's going on in your mind instead of looking for it in the ring. I had a coach who did similar with me. He was waiting for that lightbulb to go off and you begin to relax and work it out that you're no one's punching bag. If that moment hasn't happened yet, you don't need to be in sparring with guys who are in there to make themselves look good. Have the words and I would like to know what he says.

I dont understand coaches like, if you can call him that.
Seek out another boxing gym because if he does what you say he does than he has no interest in you, and is using you as a live punching bag.
I do not believe he will suddenly change. I was in similar situations.

yeh i was a bit like this, cannon fodder, lol had no real talent vs other fighters.
didnt really help me much, just put me in the ring as a moving target for the more experienced fighters, ie: his son. lol
i did enjoy boxing when i did it but admit i didnt have the reactions not to get hit, or improve was stiff as hell.
realised it was too hard of game and getting punched too much isnt alot of fun if you cant hit the other guy back :D

dont read to much into what i say, your probably sparring alot more established fighters.
i was getting hit cleanly by beginners and 20+ amateur fighters alike.

also u wont learn anything from getting beaten up every week, so if this the case. you should try another gym.
