I felt sorry for RJJ

I also felt bad for Roy but he still fought valiantly and in his prime he would win a wide UD.

 

I didn't Jones had his day ..As a die hard im glad there was no quit in him .. Joe deserved a little spotlight as well and he showed nothing but ultimate respect to Roy .I looked at his showboating like a cheap tribute ..Either way two legends closing out their careers .In a few yrs no one will focus on the negatives for either man ..Ranking will be more of an issue if anything else.

 

You're calling contenders, champion and mandatories cabdrivers and school teachers?, you probably have Roy Jones mixed up with James Toney.

 

I think a fight between Joe and Roy would be closer in their prime's, but I still think Calzaghe would give Roy trouble at any stage of his career.

 

I felt sorry for him also, he doesnt need pity, but i felt sorry for boxing fans across the world who deserved to see these men fight while in their primes

Jones would have being brilliant then and Calzaghe would have had to fight not dance

It would have being great, Jones would have won and i feel sorry for Calzaghe also, he is in a false sense of greatness

The guy is a legend of the sport, loved by millions, and made a hell of a lot of money from last night.

Joe showboating was stupid though, made him look like a ****. It is ok in small doses but he went way over the top with it. Great performance from him though in terms of boxing.

 

Why not showboat a show boater...make him take his own medicine.
I do so like that sort of thing...SR Leonard quiting on his stool was...great....He did not have the guts to take what he had handed out.

Jones taking his beating like a man made me respect him, for the first time*. Tyson also always took his beating like a man.

*I was a DM fan. DM was disrespected by millions of Jones fans who had never seen him...nor due to Jone's HBO contract, ever heard of him either.

 

Joe would have beaten the excellent McCallum and Toney as well. Joe is like a super Dave Tiberi, who clearly outboxed a prime Toney.

Unless Jones could have KO'd Calzaghe, which is possible, a prime Joe Calzaghe (maybe three or four years ago's version) could have given even a prime RJJ a very competitive fight in a time machine fight.

I think Joe and Roy are two of the greatest ever at their weight range and obviously from last night Joe is still near his prime while RJJ is past it.

RJJ gave it a good effort and showed heart, which we never knew about when he was knocking out mandatory part time policeman for most of his defenses. He should have insisted on fighting the tougher contenders/fellow beltholders back then. It would have been tougher than the fights he did fight, but he would have almost definitely beaten those contemporaries (not sure about Calzaghe himself, but probably Daruis M. and the others), and covered himself in glory doing it.

People have given Joe crap about who he fought but Roy fought a lot of undeserving "contenders" for many years. Joe unified against the terrifying Lacy, then considered to be a mini Tyson, and then unified against a young strong Kessler. I do give RJJ credit for decisively beating Toney, who was a dominant fighter.

Also, even if someone thinks Joe is too old to beat Dawson at light heavy, it does not detract from Joe's greatness. Joe is above his best weight now. You can't force someone to keep fighting until someone beats him. At some point he can retire. It would be perfectly ok for Calzaghe to say "Dawson would be a very tough challenge, and while I think I could beat him, I just don't have it in me to do what it would take any more. I'm retiring."

 

Felt sorry for RJJ, horrible arrogance from Joe and i'm welsh!

DO any of you guys think it would have made more sense for Tarver to have been Joes opponent? after all Tarver beat Jones twice?

 

Roy Jones got served his own remedy.... He did it so many times himself...

On the other hand, I felt sorry for Jones seeing him cut and bloodied like that ! It's always sad to witness a past great fighter become so vulnerable !!

Roy Jones' greatest problem since Tarver II is not his loss of speed, not his loss of leg movement or his loss of reflexes but mostly the fact he stopped throwing combinations !

Why did he stop doing so ? Because he's permanently, psychologically scarred from his 2 KO losses ! He's unconsciously afraid to let his hands go !!

 

only a fool would write joe off prime for prime with jones.

2 factors mean that nobody walks over joe

1 - the ability to adjust his style to that of his opponent

2 - the ability to fight his best when he is most in trouble.

 

Jones's showboating suited his style. Calzaghe just looked like a *****.

 

Jones would have beat him though, nothing i have seen will ever change that

Roy is 40 years of age, he shouldn't have done the showboating. Simple as.
