Unfortunately for Jones, that fight put a doubt in his mind that he would have taken care of business with Calzaghe in his prime..although I can't see the 96 version of RJJ losing against Joe...
Don't feel so bad for Jones. I'm sure he's more than grateful enough about the 50-50 split and the one last opportunity to not care a bit about Calzaghe's showboating. I really liked the way the guys showed respect for each other before and after.
That's when the fight was truly over - when Roy lost his belief. Reminded me of when Tyson said something very similar to his corner near the end of the Lewis fight.
I am not sure if those were his exact words I shall edit the quote when i have the full fight but it was words to that effect.
That's crap. Jones used to love to "Showboat"..... to humiliate his opponents.... some who weren't fit to share the same ring as him. Did he ever let that stop him from humiliating a fighter? Jones took the money..... and he had to cop his own medicine. No one forced him to take the fight....FFS!atsch Congrats to Calzaghe...... He fought a great fight.:happy
the showboating was all part of joe breaking jones mentally. i thought the hands down stuff was fantastic, brilliant reactions from a 36 year old, that took every bit of belief away that jones had left in him. the other part of this was that joe was thinking this is gonna be his last night in the boxing ring and he wanted to enjoy himself, so **** jones, he got schooled and **** jones' fans - what goes around comes around. at the end of the day calzaghe took pity on jones in the last 3 rounds. if he really wanted too he could have turned it on and stopped jones, not through knockout but through volume of unanswered punches. joe showed respect to jones by letting him finish the fight, leaving jones with a little moral victory for himself and his fans.
I've seen average fighters catch Joe parading around with his hands down, the fact that Jones couldn't do it really displays the absolute decrepit state boxing wise he is in.
Like I said, there's no glory in making a shot fighter who's already been knocked out by Tarver and Johnson, look silly. Shame on Cal for doing it, but he did well with what he had in front of him.
Exactly..... Calzaghe won the mental battle and the "Showboating" was a large part of that. You could see that Jones had lost his self belief......His eyes (the one that was still open).... said it all.
RJJ would not have stopped Calzaghe within 3 rounds even in his prime, I think if RJJ had been in his prime he wouldn't have knocked Calzaghe out, but I think it would have been very close on points.
How can people criticise Calzaghe for showboating against Roy Jones? Jones is thr king of showboating, I bet people on here are more offended by it than Jones is, I'm sure Jones finds it amusing that Calzaghe was showboating.
