This sounds like a good scenario. Bowe really did have a terrific jab, and even the super-powered Steward-era Lewis didn't have that (though being with Steward improved LL's left by leaps and bounds).

It might just have come down to Bowe's being able to take that right hand...and LL being able to weather the occasional, earth-shaking uppercut.

I think the uppercut would prevail...but that's only if Bowe really wasn't scared of LL. These days I wonder more and more if the (early) Olympics stoppage traumatized Big Daddy. It could be that a couple of those shots (and they were pretty badass LL shots, I admit that readily) rocked Bowe to the bone and might have made him gun-shy on a big level.

Of course, as I mentioned earlier, Bowe stood right in front of Lewis asking him to knock him out directly after fighting the fight of his life. I can't see a scared man challenging someone like that. Watch the incident again and tell me.

That's why Michael Dokes and Greg Page both got out of boxing when they did, the issues with the AAU.

It was a terrible stoppage. In fact, the entire fight was refereed terribly.

The 1988 Olympics were notorious for their terrible officiating - referees and judges included.

Some fights were bloody all-out wars. Some fights were stopped on a whim. Referees were beaten in the ring by enraged coaches and fighters. Fighters staged protests. Judges were confirmed to have taken bribes.

In fact, the officiating was considered so universally biased and abysmal, the entire way amateur boxing around the globe was scored and refereed was CHANGED for the next Olympic Games.

But the changes in 1992 were arguably even worse, with the addition of electronic scoring and the tabulations and the fact that old judges who had never seen a computer or used a hand-held device were now required to punch a button for one fighter or another after every punch landed.
