I find Winky Wright far more exciting today than I ever did when he was active...

I never liked him at 154, didn't care for his style, although later in his career when he moved up and fought Jermaine Taylor I found him pretty entertaining, mainly cause he wasnt so defensive minded...

But now going back and watching his fights again from 18, 20 years ago, his style is much more appealing to me. I guess I have more of an appreciation for defensive and unique styles than I used to.

In his heyday I really only ever watched Wright in his biggest fights against Trinidad, Mosely, Williams and Taylor...

Does anyone have any other recommendations for vintage Wright ???

I remember back in the day I used to always defend him from guys who found him boring. He is underappreciated

Took me about a decade to come around, but I agree. Miss those defensive styles of the 90s and early 2000s

He has the reputation of being a boring fighter but i dont think he was boring at all sure he had some snoozefests but what fighter didnt. My fav fight of him is his fight with Vargas i think it was a briliant fight. Others i liked were against Jermain Taylor, Shane Mosley 2, Harry Simon, Robert Frazier, Ike Quartey and Vazquez.

I always thought the Vargas fight was his coming out party and an entertaining fight. The first figjt with Bronco Mckart was pretty good as well although he hadn't fully embraced his high guard walk people back style. The Ike Quartey fight was another good one because Quartey was who he got his style from. They were good friends and he gave Ike one last good payday. He basically took Ike's style and made it his own.

His fights vs Harry Simon, Fernando Vargas, Julio Cesar Vasquez, were all entertaining fights. He lost all these fights 2 of them by debatable decision, but they were entertaining fights where Wright was offensive and shows heart.

As for underrated performances apart from the ones you've mentioned..... then i'd watch Quartey, Mullings, Dodson, Council.

I just rescored the Wright vs Hopkins fight. I had Hopkins winning 6 rounds to Wrights 5 and 1 round tied. Hats off to Wright though for moving up to 170 to make the catchweight.

Wasn't Simon the only guy to ever stop him?

I always enjoyed watching Winky, he was tough & clever in there and perhaps a bit stronger physically than he gets credit for.

I can understand why he perhaps wasn't the most exciting fighter around, he was a bit (did I say a bit?) plodding and his punches were without much explosiveness & venom. I believe the fact that he was a southpaw greatly helped him, with the style he chose.

I honestly never understood the notion of Wright being a boring fighter. It’s not like he ever fought in a negative style where he constantly retreated on the back foot. Even in his early days before he molded his style into what we know now he tended to throw lots of punches. He had a style that was very efficient and possessed one of the best southpaw jabs. Some of his fights are also very watchable such as the fights mentioned. His flawless performance against Trinidad is still one of my favorites to watch.

Seems like Wright is the kind of fighter that is an acquired taste.

Nah he won a decision vs Wright but it was a very close fight, both fights vs Simon and Vargas were razor thin close that Wright was unlucky to lose TBH.

I had Wright edging Vargas in their fight, I thought that was a very good performance from Wright a coming out party for him if you will. Wright may of lost but was very impressive in the fight and was the aggressor coming forward for the entire fight which is out of character for him normally.

I'll have to rewatch that one. I remember getting that same impression when he fought JT, although he was already an older fighter then, so not so much a coming out party, but he was the aggressor and seemed more than happy to mix it up with the bigger stronger Taylor.
