I give a flying "F," Holmes versus Shavers in '79 kicked ass.

I admit it was a good fight from two great fighters. Holmes, is one of the elite HW's ever and he showed the heart of a champion in this fight when he was hit by a GREAT shot by arguably the greatest puncher in Heavyweight history. Holmes, dominated the fight for the most part and he showed his great skills as well.

I just reviewd poor Shavers getting decked by a Jeff Sims right hand in rd. 1 back in '81 on the undercard of "Ali-Berbick." Shavers got up at 9 from what was a very slow count by the ref, yet Shavers stormed back to TKO Sims a few rds later.... 'Twas a good fight...

According to interviews with Lyle, Ali and Holmes; Earnie Shavers hit harder than George Foreman and harder than Mike Tyson,.

    Slip, my foot!

Earnie Shavers was good enough to compete with the top fighters of his or any era, but would usually lose.

shavers would fight to a standstill and he could knock anyone out. when he got beat he got beat trying. there was no quit in him and he always went for it. maybe he tried too hard.

I love the pre and post interviews by Howard Cosell.... The event was good in 1979.... All on ABC Television "Prime-Time."
    :good
I love how Holmes told Cosell during the aftermath, while on the air, that he'd fight / take-on "All Mother****ers" in the division... That went out on national TV..... Hehehe....

I enjoyed the first fight more, with Holmes coming out determined to make his name and put on a serious show... the second fight was largely lethargic from both men aside from one or two moments of excitement in the whole thing rounded off by wild swinging and frontrunning by both.

A punch lands on a glove and knocks a guy off balance like in the 1st with Duran and Buchanan..it's called a knockdown..in this fight, Davey Pearl calls it a slip after a shoulder punch sends Holmes down..Pearl screwed up..that was a 2nd kd for Shavers....or else that kd of Buchanan was called wrongly....don't know.

That desperation shot from Shavers to Holmes' shoulder meant nothing in rd. 9... Holmes was tapped and somewhat slipped on the wet canvas, thus, he dropped to the mat... Holmes was not hurt there at all... And by the next round, Holmes was once again pumping lefts and rights off Shavers' dome... Holmes TKO 11 Shavers..... Referee Davey Pearl waives it off when Shavers is on wobbly legs and eating leather on the ropes...
