I got it WRONG! Canelo won the fight.

Let me start off by saying that I am a lifelong boxing fan and a historian of this great sport. I am almost always an excellent live fight judge, but ladies and gentlemen, I got it WRONG! I will be honest, I was very tired after travelling back from the Mike Tyson show in Biloxi. Still, I am making no excuses, my scorecard was bad. After watching this fight again, this time with the benefit of being able to truly analyze the fight by watching certain rounds more than once, I have to say Canelo Alvarez won this fight. My analysis is as follows...

Round 1: (Canelo 10-9) I thought Canelo won this round. I scored it even when I scored it live, but after scoring it again, I am firm that Canelo won the round.

Round 2: (Canelo 10-9) This was definitely a Canelo round. Canelo was moving forward and landing shots.

Round 3: (Canelo 10-9) Another round that definitely belonged to Canelo
Alvarez.

Round 4: (Canelo 10-9) Canelo took an early lead in this round and then Trout landed enough to take the lead towards the middle of the round. Canelo landed the best shot of the round, which was a big jab near the end of the round. This was the closest round of the fight, thus far, but I have to score it for Canelo. When scoring live, I scored it for Trout, but after watching it about 5 times, it was either an even round or a close Canelo round. Again, It was close, but the big shot by Canelo was enough to separate the two fighters, in my opinion. I wouldn't argue with someone who scored this round for Trout based on volume.

Round 5: (Trout 10-9) This was definitely Trout's most decisive round of the fight, so far. Trout outboxed Canelo who seemed content to just try to make Trout miss. Trout landed more and clearly deserved to win this round.

Round 6: (Trout 10-9) In this round, Trout significantly outlanded Canelo. Canelo did land the better punches in the round, but basically gave the round to Trout by not punching enough. Canelo was mostly lying on the ropes trying to make Trout miss.

Round 7: (Canelo 10-8) Of course, this round belonged to Canelo. Even though Trout was knocked down, it wasn't a horrible round for him. He still landed some decent shots on Alvarez, including a nice shot right before the round ended. Canelo still landed enough to make it a 10-8 round with the knockdown.

Round 8: (Trout 10-9) The Showtime commentators made this round seem like Trout dominated it, but I thought it was a pretty close round. I was very impressed with Canelo's defense, but he didn't punch enough and Trout won the round.

Round 9: (Canelo 10-9) I thought Canelo had a good round this round. He was walking forward and landing the better shots. He was also landing more shots and then decided to take the last 45 seconds or so off and try to be Willie Pep. He succeeded in making Trout miss most of the punches he threw, but in doing so, made the round much closer than in could have been. I think Canelo still won the round by landing the better shots. When scoring this round live, I scored it for Trout. I am definitely seeing that my initial scorecard was not great. I am disappointed in myself as I am usually a very good live judge.

Round 10: (Trout 10-9) Trout's round based on volume. Both fighters landed some nice shots, but Trout landed more often.

Round 11: (Canelo 10-9) Canelo won this round by landing the harder shots and even seemed to stun Trout a bit near the end of the round.

Round 12: (Trout 10-9) Trout clearly won the round by landing more punches. Canelo seemed content to just sit back, counter and finish the round. Of course, Canelo knew he was ahead due to the stupid open scoring. Canelo still landed a few nice shots, but not enough to win the round.

 

My live fight scorecard was 115-113 for Trout. I hate when I get it wrong!!! I know, I am just a fan, so my card doesn't mean **** anyway, but I look at it like this, what if I were a real judge? I could have messed it up for the rightful victor. All it takes is for two judges to have an off night and BOOM, a fighter loses a fight that he should have won. Anyway, just my two cents.

 

I watched a different fight this time. Canelo looked great, with the exception of taking certain rounds off. Trout did not do enough to win enough rounds to win.

 

Nothing wrong with that. There were some close rounds. Regardless of your score, I feel Canelo should have won on anyone's card. Remember, I am speaking to myself here because I GOT IT WRONG!!! Of course, Stanley Christodoulou was WAY off!

 

I strongly disagree. Round 5 was clear for Trout. Watch it again, this time with your bifocals. I admitted that I ****ed up on my initial score, but if you gave Canelo round 5, I have to disagree. Either way, the right guy won the fight and that is what matters.

Round 6 was a closer round, but I still felt Trout won it.

 

It is the 10 point must system.
