Vitali was doing well early, but Byrd was coming on strong in round 9.

Vitali quit because he had a shoulder injury.

Vitali redeemed himself in terms of heart by fighting hard against Lewis, but lost that fight too (to an undertrained, inactive, old Lewis who couldn't even beat Hasim Rahman when he undertrained).

But hey, give him credit for the Byrd fight.

At least this time, unlike the 1996 Olympics, he didn't get caught using steroids.

Byrd came on strong because Vitaly had a torn shoulder already.

Also, Rachman fought a prime Lewis so don't discount that fight.

What is it like to hate somebody that doesn't even know you exist?

I know, Rahman fought an undertrained Lewis, and knocked his ass out.

Vitali fought an undertrained Lewis, and lost.

Vitali would have knocked Lewis out in the 7th round. Angelo Dundee said that Vitali was cheated out of the title that night. Even Max Kellermann said that Lewis was finished that night, and he was sitting right behind Lewis' corner.

The crowd seemed to get behind Byrd when he landed some punches. :huh
What was that all about? I guess everybody loves the Davids when they fight the Goliaths.

Lewis was getting to the sliced up Klitschko by the round and was starting to stagger him too often ..... I say VK was leading by a touch at the time of stoppage , but Lewis was not going anywhere and getting more comfortable with the pace.. It was only a matter of time before Vitali started to cave in mentally .. Lewis was on his way to a TKO win two rounds after the actual stoppage.. VK did great and even Lewis himself realised how bad his own skills had eroded which is exactly why he called a time out on his career.. Lewis did indeed turn old in front of us all on that night...

The Rahman fight in Carnival city was a case of taking a better than average heavyweight challenger with far above average power extremely lightly..

Rahman did the right thing, took the bull by the horns and exploited on the knowledge that Lewis was counting on arriving late in SA due to the Oceans 11 filming in the USA... Rahman knew this and set up camp in SA very early and was almost native to the altitude by the time Lewis arrived and he had a comfortable edge by fight time.. His opportunism worked for him as he landed his one grab at glory in a very technically hard fight for him to succeed in..

Rahman was looking quite sorry for himself just prior to his victory , he had to box with his arms almost outstretched to keep Lewis off of him as rounds went by.. Lewis had a fixed smug grin acros his face even as he was caught by the Ko punch.. It was just a very dedicated man doing what his own limitations would allow him to do to make a better life for himself.. Lewis once again took his eye off the ball , a lesson he should have learned in September of 1994....
