Boxing isn't all about stoppages, and if you watched the fight you are undoubtedly aware that Calzaghe could have ended it if he wanted to. You could almost see Calzaghe realize that Jones was not Jones anymore, and it would be wrong to maul him into the canvas like he would to any other fighter who was doing so little to fight back. Calzaghe did not intend to stop Jones.

He realized that Jones wasn't Jones when he signed the fight. Don't give us any bull**** about Calzaghe giving Jones any fighters honor or something like that, he was taunting a shot Jones the entire time.

Tbh how so many can claim Ward would win just shows how they know nothing of boxing, or are nuthuggers or just hate calzaghe. We even had a group talking of how ward could have beaten prime RJJ yesterday. And they accuse the euros of overhype lol

I think the discontent for Ward’s approach in the Green fight, is clouding a lot of peoples judgement on here. Yes it wasn’t pleasing to the eye, but at the same time it was very effective.

Now in regards to Calzaghe – are we talking about the Calzaghe of now? The one that would have to come out of retirement? If so, then Ward would be all wrong for him! But if we’re talking about a prime Calzaghe, then it would only be fair to match him with a prime Ward too. Because currently Ward is very young and is a long way off from reach his peak. And judging by his complete shut out performance on Saturday, and the convincing win (regardless of how untidy it was) over a person everyone regarded as the best Super Middleweight (Kessler) – Ward is showing the signs of a potential future great.

Now if we match this Ward that we think he will become, against whichever Calzaghe you want to use – then I’d go for a Ward win, no doubt about it. Ward seems to be cut from the same cloth as Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins, guys that would have no problem in dealing with Calzaghe in their primes.

So yeah, not only do I think Ward is more talented and the victor in this fantasy matchup, I also think Ward will go on to have a far better legacy than Calzaghe too.

Yeah, I'm sure he did. For a start, Calzaghe's last 2 fights were at Light Heavyweight. Also, where were Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell when Joe hung is gloves up? Why would an ageing Calzaghe want to step into the ring at a weight he no longer fought at, against 2 young, unknown US fighters?

You might aswell say Chris Eubank retired to avoid fighting Carl Froch.

As for Ward v Calzaghe. I'd pick a prime Calzaghe by clear UD or late stoppage. If Calzaghe came back now, then i'd favour Ward.

I don't think Ward would be an easy fight for Calzaghe. Ward is very technically sound and is rough and awkward like Hopkins. I have been impressed with Ward so far, he isn't flashy or even that dynamic a fighter but he gets the job done.

But I would favour Calzaghe, who I think is a little quicker and his workrate would definately pose Ward problems. I can't see Ward stopping Calzaghe he simply doesn't have the power and outpointing him would mean he somehow manages to adapt and deal with Calzaghe's workrate, which is a tall order for any fighter. As good as Ward is I haven't seem enough to think he has what it takes to beat a peak Calzaghe.

Ward either kept Green at close inside range, and smothered Green with hooks, or had Green at a distance that Green wasnt able to land.

First 6 rounds of Hopkins Calzaghe

When Hopkins either had Calzaghe too close to him, and Calzaghe couldnt get off with his slaps, or he had Calzaghe out of range then threw a lead right that would land on Calzaghe with ease, Calzaghe wasnt doing ****.

It was when Hopkins started to do some acting and faking low blows because the 43 year old was getting tired, that Calzaghe came back into the fight but was still getting hit with lead rights throughout the night.

Obviously that Calzaghe was old, but 5 ft 11 Calzaghe against 6 ft 1 physically stronger Ward, with Ward using physical strength and would do what Hopkins did to Calzaghe for the first 6 rounds but for the full 12 rounds.

    I conclude:

It wont be an easy fight for either, but the smaller Calzaghe would lose.

Dirrell who is taller, has a better reach than Ward, and fights at range is one I see giving Ward difficulties

Ward beats Calzaghe, far better technical skills and defense, better puncher, just as fast. Ward beat Kessler so much easier than Joe and showed himself to be a bit better imo
