I hate to say it because the guy is great for the sport, but Pac is overrated...

There are plenty of fighters who could challenge Floyd.....but Floyd for whatever reasons decides to go with more secure fights. Floyd follows the money and the less risky road. Paul, Cotto, Shane, Marg ect...were all out there who would present a good challenge. Floyd would probably win, but that would be a test he's never had once in his career expect for the JLC fight.

Good point there. While comparisons to old greats is debatable, I would say both Mayweather and Pacquiao are two of the best fighters today. I wouldn't say that they're the perfect fighters, afterall they each have their own flaws.

He's rated like he's supposed to. Only 5 years ago he was looked at as a one-dimensional fighter who doesn't have much of a future, now look where he is and look how people pick him over Mayweather.

No one gets overrated like this within 5 years for doing nothing. The man is defying logic, it might sound ridiculous or whatever to you but that's what it is. Pacman is making history, first ever 4 weight division lineal champion, first ever 7 weight division champion, first ever athlete from the Philippines to go THIS fan. Appreciate him while he's around, if Pac is overrated then all other greats like Ali are also overrated. Guys that make history = guys that care about their position in the sport, the man has over 50 fights and still have the motivation to make history in your approach and not 100% money then you're an ATG. It's that kind of mentality that's required and physical ability that can carry you successfully of course.

Sugar Ray Robinson will always be considered the greatest ever, because he is the safest and easiest pick to make. Putting anyone ahead of SRR is damn near sacrilege in boxing circles. I think Floyd's reluctance to fight the top guys is the only thing that keeps him out of the top 20 or so ATG. The man is extremely talented, but unless he starts fighting the top guys within the next few years, he will NEVER be mentioned among the all time greats.

Here are the top five in the Ring magazine welterweight rankings from a couple of decades ago:

    Marlon Starling
    Simon Brown
    Lloyd Honeyghan
    Mark Breland
    Buddy McGirt

Where would you put Mayweather and Pacquiao in that list then?

It's true, the hottest girl in high school looks hot, until you put her next to a movie star and then she looks plain and short.

Similar with Mayweather. He looks great against lower competition (Marquez, the counterpuncher who had to be an aggressor against Mayweather, THE GUY HAD NO CHANCE. He is one of the best counterpunchers on Earth but his Offence is a joke) but let's see what happens when he fights someone who can actually give him a run for his money. Mosely, Cotto, Margharito and Pacquiao. The next 2 years will let us know just how good Floyd Mayweather Jr was.

That's more like three decades ago, so you can see why I would think that by a 'couple of decades' you meant....well what you said.

But now I'm intrigued. Tell me more about Marvin Hagler's welterweight career....
