You confuse "Ring Generalship" with Activity. PAUL was busy but not effective. Lara was less active but more effective. It's "QUANITY vs QUALITY". And the Quality came by way of Lara...Paul had the volume and work rate but he was not showing ANY ring generalship. Lara however was controlling the distance and where the fight was fought 90% of the time. Williams did his best on the inside but Lara rarely let the fight take place in close quarters for too long. Once he got range, Lara was able to tee off with that lazer left that found its mark all night long. The damage was inflicted on the face of Paul based on how well he was able to take away Paul's only way to beat him with the Style Paul has...which is to fight on the inside at a very high pace.
Some people exaggerate the cause of the moment. People seeing this fight 11-1 or 12-0 for Lara is just as wrong. I scored it 7-5 for Lara and some from other websites had it a draw. PWill was clearly the aggressor and never stopped throwing punches and won the inside fighting.
Being a volume puncher is only useful if it helps you in out-landing your opponent. If Williams threw 100 punches per round, landed 20 while Lara threw 30 punches per round and landed 10, then volume wins the day. But if Williams threw 100 punches per round, landed 15 while Lara threw 40 punches per round and landed 20, then volume has won you absolutely nothing because you were outlanded despite outthrowing. It's should look WORSE on Williams, not better, because it means he wasn't accurate and Lara showed strong defensive ability. When you can hold somebody to 15%-19% landed, you've defensively owned them. That shouldn't count against you.
Knockleup I do agree with you. Ring generalship not activity, it is looking in control. It is when your will is imposed. I think Lara done a good job in the fight and he may of won the fight. When I rewatched the fight, I watch him run, he did not control any distance. His big shots didn't stop Paul Williams from diving in with his head and arms down. Knuckleup, from one boxing fan to the other, rewatch the fight. Lara left the door open for the fight to get taken. He honestly look scared, he ran the whole fight but Paul Williams dumb ass allowed him to hit him with one big punch. Lara landed no combinations, held held on night. You said Lara control distance, WHen??????? Paul williams walk through his first punch all night. Paul beat him up in the clinch all night.
If you want to watch a fighter control distance, watch Marquez, Mayweather or Gamboa. When they don't want a person to get to close, they don't. I watch marquez control the distance of the fight with Pacman in their first fight. In the first round Pacman was all over Marquez knocking him down three timmes in the first round. Marquez then made come tactical changes and kept Pacman off him the rest of the fight. Lara did nothing like that, he just ran away and hit him with the big shot. The first round look just like the final round. Paul Williams got inside everytime and Lara held him.
I'll rewatch it... I've had a different view of fights watching them sober at times. Like I said....I thought it was a robbery based on how Paul looked vs OTHER opposition where his pressure and inside fighting allowed him to dominate. In this fight he didn't dominate anything. He did well in spots on the inside but wasn't able to close distance like he typically does which Paul can't do if he wants to continue at this level. He just didn't look like Paul of old. he looked slower and unsure of himself. Lara controlled distance from round 3 or 4 on. You called it running but Lara was picking his shots and laying traps. It wasn't as pretty as Floyd Mayweather but it was very effective against that version of Paul. Lara had the edge in speed and used it to his advantage. Don't get me wrong...Paul did have his moments but they were very few and far between the consistant lefts that were landing for Lara all night. But I'll check it out again to see what it looks like without being tipsy. i thought at the begining Lara did look scared and may have lost a few early rounds but as soon as Lara figured out that he could control Paul with the right distance....that's when he began landing that left for the remainder of the night. Paul's performance only got worse as the fight went on if I recall right. Bottom line is this...For PAUL to be the "PUNISHER" he's got to fight his fight. And on Saturday he ended up fighting Lara's fight which was mostly on the outside, at Lara's distance. Now...if Paul used his height and reach to his advantage, Paul could be a great outside fighter as well as a great inside fighter....but he's not changing his stripes anytime soon.
The cleaner, effective punches were landed by Lara, poor guy was robbed blind. Worst decision I've ever seen.
All 3 judges gave Williams the 11th round, despite being Lara's best round, which is very telling. It indicates that they did NOT want Williams to lose.
This guy says Williams looked like an amateur yet he thinks he deserved the win. I think we're done here.
Paul Williams never won the fight dude but to his credit when I watched it the 2nd time around and scored it I could probably see why the judges would of scored it a draw, simply because Lara would paint Williams with Left hands but not follow up with anything. He would then hold and just land another left and then hold again. I believe the judges were seeing Paul's workrate and he did land some nice body punches throughout the whole fight. I believe some people on here have got a bit carried away but I do believe that Lara was robbed of a victory but at the worst I believe a draw would of been a bit easier to swallow. Although I had Lara winning simply based on clean effective punches landed, not pitty pat work rate shots. I also believe that the commentators would of influenced alot of the viewers scorecards. Harold Letterman's scorecard was a bit wide in my opinion, I could give Paul at least 4 clear rounds.
