re; weight classes Say theres a welterweight title fight, and one guy comes in @ 147lbs Is there any ruling to stop a fighter coming in at a different weight ie under 140lbs, so technically in a different weight division? Also, has this ever happened.
No rule against it - you can enter at any weight as long as it is 147 (or the division maximum) or less. Personally I'd like to see tighter controls on maximum weight-gain from weigh-in to fight. Ray Robinson, a small middleweight, came in under 160 for his light-heavy title challenge against Joey Maxim who was just under 175. I'd need to look up my bio of Ray to check though.
Not sure if its ever happened.. Guess it must have somewhere with all the fights that take place. Enzo Mac said a few weeks ago he used to weigh in with his phone, keys, wallet etc in his pocket cos he made cruiserweight so easily.. I Seem to remember a heavyweight a while back weighing in with lead in his boots I think it was...
As said no rule against it but I believe it would be at the discretion of the athletic commissioning body as to whether they'd sanction the fight. Too large a weight discrepancy and they probably wouldn't sanction the fight (unless it's held in Mississippi, they're the "international waters" of boxing commissions).
Nicky Piper wishes so. I remember when the then undefeated Mensa Genius agreed to take on a Cruiserweight journeyman as a same day substitute. I wonder what happened to Carl Thompson?
