The best hook off of a jab I ever saw was the one that finished off Escalera in the rematch.

With Alexis, it was about precision and placement which were alternatives to speed and resulted in thunderous power. Perfect stuff.

Every shot he threw is note-worthy. The left hook that took out Olivares and Escalera. The Right uppercut to the body that damn near cut Mancini and Kobayashi in half. And of course, the straight right. I'm sure Rooney still has nightmares about it.

The following are some comments made by Enrique Hernandez (interviewed a couple of days ago), son of the famous trainer 'Cuyo' Hernandez, who once was Arguello's trainer (Escalera II and Watt). I thought of sharing this with you guys. I think it tells us a little bit about why Arguello was such a great boxer.

"..... after the fight against Escalera, my father told Alexis that he had to dedicate more time for training and improve more his skills to avoid cuts, which Arguello accepted without problems"

"..... in the gym he did everything my father told him to do....he was neither pretentious nor arrogant, he showed dedication... he didn't have specific time to finish his training..... he used to train late, more than necessary to perfection his offensive skills. If he was not satisfied with his hook then he kept training until his hook was good enough"

"..... he was a fast learner and a perfectionist"

"..... he said to my father, you just have to order, tell me what to do and I will obey"

"..... I was personally impressed by Arguello's enthusiasm. He never complained. He was always willing to learn"

"..... I remember very well whe Alexis won his third title against Watt.... when we came back to the dressing room.... Alexis knelt down and kissed my father's hand and after that he said: thanks, without you I would have never won this title"

I thought he looked pretty good against Elizondo. He seemed to have knocked the air out of him. Arguello even looked good "losing" to Fernandez. I dont think Arguello really lost. he just couldnt get Fernandez to stop running. Had the ref done his job right and penalized Vilomar, Alex probably would have won I'm sure.

Escalera 1 the best action fight. Arguello's peak performance and had a great run defending his title against impressive assortment of opponents, most of who had or would win the title

The mancini fight I think sort of made Arguello. His postfight interview brought him many new fans.

Arguello was a real striver. he said he could have gone for Mamby or Haley but he wanted the genuine titlist, the one that was recognized as the true title holder which was Pryor. My friend who I watched it with, was really dissapointed that he'd been stopped.
