I have never seen a case like Roy Jones Jr. Was it mental?

Who cares what coach Merk said? Fact is that Roy weighed 193 on the official scales fully clothed. So he came into camp at an already extremely lean 192 (8% body fat is extremely lean, not at all 'fleshy') and he weighed about 190 pounds without clothes at 6% body fat at weigh in. I'm not saying he didn't have to lose weight for Tarver but it's nowhere near what people are making out. He isn't losing pure muscle to get down to 175, he's simply getting rid of his glycogen stores and the associated water weight before rehydrating and refuelling. And I'm sure he was completely fuelled and hydrated when he weighed in for Ruiz at 193. In reality he would've put on very little muscle for Ruiz, he would've just been carrying extra glycogen and water weight compared to his light heavy contests because he didn't have to make weight, so his muscles would be looking more 'bulky'.

I always said that he should have stayed at HW, feasted on weak guys, and retire with a few defenses under his belt.

He ****ed that up, so bad.

    No, he wasnt.
He weighed in at 193lbs on the official weigh in
Mackie Shilstone told Hauser he was 193 lbs

Shelley Finkel said he had no time for Roy, because Roy was demanding stupid money. Jones is on record saying he wanted 100m to fight Tyson:patsch

For Tarver 1 he got down to 185 then drained himself down to make 175.
193 minus clothes puts him around 190 lbs
Come fight night against Tarver he was around 185 lbs

5-6 lbs is all he cut.

The weight loss is blown waaay out of proportion. He got koed and never mentally recovered. That's what happened to him.

How do you explain Roy sucking wind then and looking completely fatigued after 3 rounds when we had never seen him like that in 50 fights?

People act as if Roy looked bad against Tarver and made up the weight excuse then.. It was well known BEFORE the fight that cutting the weight was hard on Roy. Roy said he was only about 70% BEFORE getting in the ring with Tarver.

What makes me think the sclaes were off is that Ruiz also weighed in at a very light weight by his standards, so maybe the scalesd were off.

Also it doesn't make sense to me that Roy would lie about being bigger to fight Ruiz, when it is clearly more impressive the more weight he gives up. Roy was visibly a larger man in the ring against Ruiz, then he was at LHW.. I don't believe it was only 6 lbs of muscle...

Even if it was though, losing 6 lbs of muscle in a fast time, at the age of 34 can certainly hurt your body.

The weight loss is blown out of proportion yeah OK ,anyone with a set of eyes could see Jones was drained just listen to Manny Steward during the fight ..Guess he also exaggerated as well .

the weight thing is BS. He had a year to recover and has had 10 years to recover now.

If I lost 18lbs body weight, would it decrease my athletic performance for 10 years?

He had a year to recover from weight loss before he fought Tarver?:huh

Roy's performance now has more to do with the fact he is in his 40s.. But the weight loss certainly hurt an already declining body... After he was knocked out, it was too big a setback at too old of an age for him to fully recover.

A year before he was KTFO. I'd recover from losing 18lbs in about 36 hours.
