Actually I think lots of fandom on the boards is race-driven. I think it's OK so long as it's done in the spirit of friendly rivalry, but some guys definitely take it too far. That's where the flame wars come from.

That's not quite right, though. Blacks were never (not in modern history anyway) outright slaves. What the Apartheid system did was to set up a system of homelands on a tribal basis to serve as labour pools. The workers were always paid, though not very much by first world standards, admittedly.
