Here's a decent question then: who thinks Povetkin / Wilder would be a good fight? I think it might go some rounds and have the potential to be a barn burner while it lasts.
Not impossible. Wilder has excellent power if nothing else. I think that if Sasha lands some big ones though, Wilder crumbles. If he doesn't, then I and all the other people who say he has a candy chin will be very sad
Mark Breland is helping Wilder out tremendously. You can see it in the Stiverne fight where he used his long rnage jab to control Stiverne and his right hand. Problem in that fight is that I think he should have mixed it up more, but he showed potential to becoming something more than just a puncher.
If Wilder can develop a good controlling jab and becomes a boxer-puncher, his cruddy chin may not matter. Wlad hasn't got a great chin and he's done great. With the sort of dimensions Wilder has, he could be great. I think that if he fights Povetkin we will know how his future looks.
Problem is Povetkin isn't willing to fight him in America. For someone who is a bum according to this forum with no chin, you'd think that he would go to the champs backyard and knock him out. Who knows how WBC will enforce their rules about his mando. I hope they let him slide and fight who he wants, because the champ shouldn't have to go to Russia to defend his belt and risk getting robbed or give up hometurf advantage. If that happens Wilder should dropped the belt imo.
Well the obvious retort to that is that Wlad went to Russia and spanked Povetkin anyway. While doubtless having a supporting crowd is a nice thing, if Wilder is as good as advertised then it shouldn't matter. It's not like Povetkin gets different size gloves or anything. Unfortunately, as I understand it, he has some backers with big bucks, and they always win purse bids.
As good as advertised? According to 99% of the posters here he's trash. If he's as bad as advertised, he Povetkin should spank Wilder in his backyard. Yeah, but who knows if WBC will enforce the mando on him. If I were Wilder I'd drop the belt. Just becasue Wlad who is a true champ did it, doesn't mean that Wilder who just started boxing 10 years ago has to take that risk. If boxing in Russia was bigger than in the US, I'd understand why Wilder would go, but this is not the case.
Look, I rag on Wilder too, because it's funny. But he's not trash, not by any means. It's just that his record against mostly mediocre opposition flatters him. I think that Povetkin is currently the 2nd best heavyweight out there, and so do many others. A win over him would, imho, establish Wilder as the real deal. Then again, I can sort of see the logic of the champion being able to dictate when the bout takes place. The champ is the champ. I don't know whether home-turf advantage is enough of an issue to trash the belt, though. Probably our finest boxer, Brian Mitchell, fought nearly all his title defences in other people's backyards. If Wilder has real grounds to dispute the neutrality of the ref / judges, then he should do so. Otherwise he has some hard choices to make.
Sorry man, whoever wins the purse bids, they decide where and when the fight takes place. That's how it works. They won't change it just because some fan doesn't like it.
