I agree in the sense that Hopkins will try to stay on his toes and move and force Calzaghe to chase him down and try to catch him coming in all night long. If you are constantly moving, it's almost impossible to stay busy. And Winky was forced out of his game because he did so much chasing in the fight. I'm sure you recall the countless right hooks which Winky missed badly in this fight. And Kessler's power punch connect was at 47% against Calzaghe. That's great. And while Kessler has a faster right hand, Kessler doesn't have Hopkins intelligence and craftiness in the ring. So i think Hopkins can more than make up for his lack of speed by being at the right place at the right time.
The speed difference is very clear - Hopkins moves in and doesn't grab and he takes 3 or 4 side punches - right hook to the body, righ hook upstairs, left hook, right again. Calzaghe looses up much better but Winky was not that overblown - it affected his mobility but he was very compact, strong and in shape for that one. I think Winky's right jab is the best in the business even at 170 but Hopkins never took his eyes of what Winky was doing. This content is protected Calzaghe did well to wait for his opportunities because all Kessler wanted was him to get reckless and pay for that. I like Calzaghe's fluid punching and potshotting in the zone but I don't think it's wise to drop his hands with this guy - he is that solid skilled fundamentally, always in fighting position to let the right hand go and doesn't leave himself open when swinging whereas Calzaghe does: This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
I doubt anyone can really "pot shot" against Hopkins. He's not going to chase someone around who is doing that, so it would be damn near impossible to pull that off against him. He would adjust to someone doing that very quickly. Only someone of a prime Roy's ability would have a chance at it, and even he could not. I agree, Hopkins vs. Winky was a good fight.
I disagree. Wright has great footwork. This is the reason he's always in position to defend and counter. Watch the in-fight he did against Taylor to see superb footwork. He does small steps to outposition Taylor. Calzaghe can be seen out of position quite often. That's covered up by this high workrate.
None whatsoever. WINKY 1) Winky is fast fading after his many matches in Europe, and now top matches in USA. 2) Winky does best at light MW, and MW, where his lack of power isn't as evident. 3) Wrights workrate is on par with Hopkins and Taylor, which is not very high, especially compared with one as Calzaghe. 4) Winky isn't light on his feet, but relies on his good defensive skills, while throwing one-shots behind this defense. JC 1) Still at his best, and his assets are - despite in a slight decline - are still top notch, and far beyond what Wright can keep up with. 2) Is more at home at light heavyweight than everything else. This is his weight, and has been for some time. 3) Calzaghes footwork, handspeed, angled shots, upper bodymovement, stamina is far too much for Winky especially considering the extra weight for Winky. 4) Though Joe takes chances with his often all-out-offence, he is at no risk, since Winky is featherfisted, and JC has a proven chin. Winky can't outpoint JC - not in a million years.
