He's an absolute beast here. The fight should make for some pretty epic photos!

Very very well put. All things being equal, Pac would still have a huge advantage in grabbing judges' attention. To get full satisfaction, I'll have to mute the sound, take serious thought in scoring and turn the tv off before the official scorecards are read.

For anyone who hasn't read haglerwon's full post, go back to page 10 and do so.

As I said, I agree with most of your points. My point of disagreement is on the criteria for scoring.

It's correct that officially fights are supposed to be scored by the criteria you mentioned, however you didn't clarify the weights that are officially supposed to be used in scoring 10-point-must system.

The weights are 70% clean, effective punches, 20% defense & effective aggression, 10% ring generalship, basic aggression, heart, excitement and other intangibles.

If the rounds that you mentioned are judged using this official criteria, then Clottey will have won most of those rounds. As is, Cotto was credited for the win based on perceived ring generalship mostly and that is a very small part of the scoring criteria. Watch the fight without commentary, you'll see what I mean.

Also 'effective aggression' means exactly that: effective aggression. You just don't have to be in there throwing punches or chasing, it has to have an effect on the opponent. Clottey is not dynamic but his aggression is very effective, when he pressures you, you can't get through his guard whiles he gets to you when he goes on the offense.

Same for ring generalship. It's not supposed to be just fancy footwork and amazing reflexes or slipping of punches. Its meant to be able to get your opponent and yourself in positions where you either prevent\avoid his attack or launch your attack.

Clottey knows where he's in the ring at all times and his footwork, though not flashy, puts him in a defensive or offensive position quickly and with little energy used. Why do you think he boasts about being able to beat every southpaw? Because he knows how to position himself so the southpaw is always within range of his right hand whiles narrowing the window the southpaw's left hand can be used and also the southpaw always has to step over Clottey's feet to get away sideways. Watch the Judah fight carefully you'll see what I mean.

That said, my take on the fight is quite close to yours. Clottey probably wins the fight based on effectiveness and defense but Pac gets the decision based on activity, excitement, dynamism and Arum's judges.

Damn. I knew I had it coming.

I guess that's what I get for making that prediction so boldly. I never learn with Clottey.
