Leonard was certainly looking for the big punch and thought once he landed it the fight would be his.

I agree with you. Not you are not over analyzing at all, that is what makes great analyzing is to really focus on specifics. Ray seemed like he thought he would win by knockout and finish what Kinchen started. He realized mid rounds this was going to be a tough fight after Tommy took the punches. You could see after each round Ray respecting Tommy more by his expressions.. He was looking for that big KO as round 5 showed. And he landed huge punches on Tommy against the ropes and Tommy took them all which surprised me. That made me think either Ray's punching power was overrated at this point or Tommy's chin was not that bad. I do think Hearns chin was better than people thought. He took Hagler's punches in round one when many guys could not. As for this fight,I think maybe the Kinchen fight made Ray think he could stop Tommy easily once he hurt him, since he thought he could stop Tommy if he hurt him and when Tommy grabbed Ray like he did Kinchen, Ray sort of laced him with both gloves. He underrated maybe Kinchen as an opponent and underrated Tommy. Kinchen was a bigger man than Ray naturally and that made the difference with thier fights with Hearns. I think after the 3rd round knockdown he realized it was a fight and started to put his punches together better, but then when he hurt Tommy in the 5th working inside more and when he hurt him he tried to end it fast and Tommy held on. I don't think Hearns was as hurt in round 5 as Ray thought he was but Ray tried and you can tell he thought he had it.. And both guys at that point knew how to survive being hurt, but after those rounds I think Ray settled down and started to work inside, and they started to exchange rounds but like Ray got the momentum after a couple of rounds with Hagler, Hearns got his rhythm and confidence after a 2 rounds. In someways similar to Hagler vs. Leonard in someways, a little more physical and Hearns and Leonard were hurt more in the rematch and Hagler or Ray were in their fight.. I think the problem with Hearns for Ray was that if he took Ray's punch, he would always land on Ray with reach and speed and jab and that gave Ray big trouble. The similarity to Hagler for Ray is that Hearns and Ray exchanged rounds. One would win one and then the other win one. I always think had Tommy only come out jabbing and slowed the pace in round 12 he would have won that fight.
