I just don't understand bags versus freestand.

A really heavy bag can weigh 300 pounds, I have heard some boxers use this.
What I don't understand is the freestanding ones. I have seen one I like on Amazon. RDX 6ft XXL Free Standing Punch Bag with Gloves & Cover - Heavy Pedestal Bag with Stand for Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, Karate - Adult Freestanding Bag for Office, Gym Home Fitness Workout.

Now, the base can be filled to 150kg so it ain't moving (the base). But this does not explain what you are punching?

Bags seem simple, 300 pound bag = your punching the 300 pound bag. Not brain science.
Free standing I can't work out the equivalent. It's for home. I chatted with RDX customer service but he really couldn't be arsed dealing with me, or so it seemed. So sacked it off.

He said I'm punching into 22kg, which is 49 pounds. If the base is stable I said the bag will be flying all over the place? The reply I got was "make your decision"!

Can anyone patiently explain this to me. I was on the verge of buying it, I don't understand so sacked it off. YouTube doesn't seem to help.

Thanks for reading this, be nice!

I'd go for a hanging bag if that's an option for you, freestanding I think is more dependent on the resistance of tje spring the bag sits on. I used to work in a care home looking after teenagers, and with a free standing bag they could knock it over fairly easily within a couple of weeks of training when they hit tje bag high (ie headshot) but then almost broke their hands when working on body shots because there was no movement in the lower part of the bag. It really didn't matter how heavy the base was (we filled it with 100kg) , when they hit the bag high, the leverage of hitting further away from the base could quite easily pull the whole thing over

Sorry it's not the best explanation, just come off a 15 hour shift, but yeah , if you've got somewhere for a hanging bag, go for that all the way

Freestanding sucks. Never do it. Had one with a 150kg basee

now I have a 6 foot hanging Outslayer muay thai bag and stuffed it with cut fabric
To a weight of 60kg and it feels perfect for all striking inc. boxing. Might need something else for uppercuts and knees.

Thanks, I have bought the one from Amazon, the RDX one. Their warranty / refund policy covers problems. There are a lot of good reviews, lets see. We (forum) can try this as an experiment. I was too concerned about a bag destroying my home's infrastructure. I wanted a bag to be fair.

    I'm puttin sand in.

Thanks for the body shot advice, I've ordered a pair of hand grippers to strengthen my wrists etc. They through in a pair of gloves, mixed reviews on them I think. I was saying to my wife I often punched bags without gloves and how stupid that was!

There was one of those punch measurer things in a club I went to years ago. I was pissed (don't drink now) and smacked it one. Damaged the cartlidge in my hand! Silly me again.

I can punch a heavybag without any protection full force with no issues except skin of course, where I rub vaseline on knuckles. Just gotta strengthen your wrist with push ups and forearm exercises like wrist rollers and hand grippers (try captain of crush).

And hit the bag slowly and gradually over time to strengthen it, eventually becomes easy.

I think the wife and neighbours wouldn't like it in the back garden. I would be too self concious, it's a me thing I know.

I would have nowhere to hang it, no trees etc. The stand up bag is meant to have a good spring etc. We will see or I might have to send back.

I was concerned about attaching a bag to a beam and rattling the house or causing expensive damage. If the stand up is crap I might have to join a gym, which I don't want to do (another me thing, I have enough equipment at home).

I didn't realise press ups help wrist strength, thanks for that! Training in the morning so will incorporate, nice one. I will look up wrist rollers now, not heard of them.

I completely understand you, I am a private person and I dont like training infront of others.

I actually built a gym from scratch in my back garden, and designed the building with a metal beam running across supported by two engaged pillars. I hang the bag from there using those metal girdle trolley than run across thr beam with 1000kg rating. Only so i didnt have to train in the garden with everyone looking, and to dampen the noise.

I just know for a fact that the standing bag has horrible feedback. Its honestly such an empty feeling, compared with a hanging bag filled with fabric.

The weight and force of the bag on the structural integrity is definitely a concern when hitting it so no need to damage your house, but if you could build some type of a wooden shed in a garden or some car
Port type thing and a metal frame inside to hold that bag, maybe 2.5 meters high, could be an option.

otherwise find a quiet’ish gym lol. But i totally get you!

Yeah, I would have said bench press too but i know many here wouldn’t be interested in bench pressing because its detrimental to boxing, but anywhere where you need to support a lot of weigh on your wrists helps.

Boxers do an exercise where they plank in a push up position, and support their weight on their fists instead of palms:

you can slow this down, and pivot on your knees to start with so as not to injure yourself, just be careful because this is really advanced the way beterbiev is doing it. Klitckos and others did this too

Well done, it may come to going to the gym at a quiet time, there's one around the corner (with a solid looking bag). It is an expensive standup, so if I need a refund it can go towards a gym membership.

    Thanks for your help.
