I think you're probably underestimating Mundine. It was a great performance on his behalf, no doubting it at all. Ottke was a 3 time Olympian and 2 time European singlets champion. The guy could fight. The fact he beat such opposition without having a decent punch speaks volumes for his technical boxing ability.
This was mundines best performance by a million miles ottke had had 380 fights in the singlet . Try and name a better one . He has sucked ever since.
Ippy, I will agree with you that he would be one of the best amateurs of all time, however alot of his success in the pro ranks was thanks to absolute corruption in the only place he fought, Germany. Watching a highlights reel of his fight with robin reid is only one example IE robin knocking him flat on his arse with a clean punch and the referee warning him for pushing, or the numerous cases of alleged glove tampering, only for the gloves to disappear after the fight when officials wished to inspect.
I don't disagree with what you're saying for a second, however is the job of the governing body, in most cases the IBF to appoint officials etc.
At that stage Mundine wasnt the total wanker we know now..He was a former wanker footy player who was becoming a very promising supermiddle weight contender.
Well i gotta disagree, running around in circles throwing the odd jab and rare right hand wasnt a very good performance to me.
Why do you disagree? it is the most work mundine has done in any fight his work rate sux, making it impossible for him to win any big fight against a live opponent.
Yeah and when those officials are wined and dined they know that they have to pay the piper or there not getting the gig next time, Ottke would have to have caught onto what game universum were playing after about the 20th dodgy decision he recieved, in the interest of his own legacy he could have fought internationally under proper rules however he was obviously happy with getting good money regularly for just showing up, therefore i think screw him he was tosser.:bbb
for me mundines credibility nosedived not after he lost this fight but when he selected his next opponent. How do you go from fighting the champion of the world to fighting brad mayo from outback queensland???
Why would Ottke leave Germany? It's not like he was going to get paid better money ANYWHERE in the world. I'm all too aware of the wining and dining, but that has very little to with Germany. It happens everywhere.
Never have I disagreed that he got some decisions that could've gone against him. However I did disagree and will do wholeheartedly that he's a stiff.
I disagree cause he looked extremely amateurish in the fight, he ran for almost all of it and got knocked out in probably the 10th punch that landed on him. He threw some jabs and right hands It was a good effort for the time but i think he has performed better as his technical skills improved. I agree that his main downfall is his workrate.
