Wilder hung on well, Ortiz I thought be able to just shrug him off and knock him out but he couldn't.
Poor AJ fans. I feel sorry for them. They all wish Wilder had been stopped so AJ would not have to fight him. And then they thought Eddie would protect AJ forever. But now the Americans have found Eddie’s weakness...... .......And now Eddie can’t wait to sell out AJ and get his greasy hands all over that money.
I wished Wilder was stopped nothing to do with AJ but because he is some wanabe internet gansta who talks more absolute crap without doing 20% of what he claims. I suspect most of his fans are molded in the same way. Post like this are another reason tbh... I find AJ fans far less annoying that Wilder ones mainly because they seem to try and emulate Wilders "coolness". Hopefully this fight doesn't take place until the divisions rightful boss is back to collect all of his titles back and take that green one that get hidden away...
It was definitely a legitimate cause for a stoppage, though that's obviously up to the ref's discretion since Wilder hadn't gone down. It's academic anyway since Wilder was able to come back into the fight and secure a stoppage of his own. Had he been that close to getting stopped no amount of ref or doctor intervention would have saved him. I actually liked the fact that the ref didn't jump in, as it gave us that dramatic turnaround in the tenth.
I definitely think fights many fights have been stopped for less. I suspect the primary factor that stayed the referee's hand was that Wilder did manage to keep tying Ortiz up. Which was a good move by Wilder. It makes a good case against early stoppages.
I don't know if it was fair or not. Clearly it can be argued that the ref made the right choice as Wilder did recover and came back to knock Ortiz out. However I think this is a big factor on where the fight takes place. I don't think anyone would argue that against AJ in the UK that would have been a TKO since AJ gets rhe same preferrential treatment there that Wilder gets here. Its also not farfetched to say that this exact fight as it happened against Ortiz would also have been a TKO loss for Wilder as the UK is known for early stoppages. I have no doubt that this issue is in the back of Wilder and Joshuas minds.
A younger Ortiz would have ktfo Wilder there and then no problem. But this 50+ version just didn't have the stamina in his old legs to finish hun off. Which is why Hybrid was ok to face him in the first place.
Let's say Wilder was saved by the bell (and not the referee) in that round. Also Ortiz did not do enough (to finish Wilder) — he was very tired himself as well at this point.
Yer Ortiz still hadn't fully recovered from his knock down and I think that may have saved Wilder tbh...
Why can't you just appreciate Wilders win. He showed big heart in this fight and KOd the most avoided guy in HW.
Ah, this again. The only genuine complaint you can have with the ref taking time to check on Wilder, is that he didn't do the same to Ortiz. What he did is legal and understandable as Wilder took a lot of punishment. In the ref's defence, Wilder looked more shaky than Ortiz did when returning to his corner. It's NYSAC rules, totally legit. Would the ref have been right to stop it? I wouldn't have complained, especially when you compare it to the Takam stoppage. But he was still able to protect himself to some degree, so I think it was fine to keep the fight going.
The refeere did help Wilder in the 8th, but even so he was still hurt during the round and Wilder managed to win fair and square later on in the 10th.
