Wow... I know its been said a million times but what a fight... Ive seen alot of fights and that is one of the best fights i have ever seen I know this gets argued about non stop but i wanna ask it again and put a poll up... Did Richard Steele make the right call in stopping the bout? My answer: Yes He doesnt know what the time is thats not his job... He looked a fighter in the eyes and asked twice: Are you alright? When the fighter looks away as Meldrick did and doesnt reply, after the beating he has taken, you stop the fight...
Haven't you seen Legendary Night's of this fight???????? So yes or maybe sooner people didn't notice the punishment Taylor was taking.
He was robbed of his biggest win ever. Taylor deserved those final seconds. I believed that he was ok to continue but got distracted by his corner. That was their fault, but Meldrick deserved the win. He was the better fighter.
What does the documentary prove? Yes, we know he took a bad beating, and ended up brain-damaged (from his whole career, not one fight). It shouldn't change one way or the other what you feel about the decision. In favor of Steele: -Taylor didn't verbally respond. He merely nodded slightly. -The ref is not the time-keeper. Against Steele's decision: -Chavez was not in the neutral corner. A ref should tell the opposing fighter to go to the corner, not stay in the center of the ring. -Taylor did nod slightly. I don't remember if Hearns gave a verbal response, I think he also only nodded, but he was stumbling all over himself and Steele still let him go on against Barkley. Taylor's legs were way more sturdy than Tommy's.
I can see both sides of the argument, however one thing I feel strongly about, is that Duva ****ed up by going on the ring apron (as well as his and Benton's strategy before rd 12). I think his presence up on there was a distraction, and that Taylor was looking at him when Steele was asking him Q's.
Hell no. I thought it was outrage when I saw the fight live 20 years ago, and I still think it's an outrage. Steele was in King's pocket. If this wasn't enough, the next year, he pulled the trigger quick for another of King's boys.
I think the real question is: If there was 2 mins to go, do you let Taylor go on Answer: NO Which mean you think (or i think) Taylor was hurt bad and Steele doesnt know the time
If this had happened at the end of rd 10 or 11 this would not even be up for debate & as you say, the ref doesnt concern himself with rds or time so yes, it should have been stopped. People are just gutted because MT came so so close but forget the time, his condition warranted a stoppage.
You and I are in ONE HUNDRED percent agreement on this. :good What Steele did was among the worst things I have seen done to a fighter in my 30 years of watching boxing.:yep There are not many true "robberies" in boxing. This was a HIGHWAY robbery.
I can understand how some feel about Taylor getting robbed seeing as how he was boxing so much better and winning the rounds. But at the same time it is unfair to take away the win from Chavez after all the work he put in, just because some of you feel sorry for him cuz he got TKO'd when he was so close to winning that fight. Chavez got the KO and I think it was the right call.
