I just watched Jones v Trinidad again

I'm not sure on what ****ed up planet Tarver is rated as a better boxer than Joe, that seems pretty ****ed up to me.

 

I don't agree with the majority of your assessment. While Jones is clearly past his best and it is true he hasn't fought an elite fighter his size since Tarver, he showed a much improved defense in the Trinidad fight. Defensively, he looked like Winky Wright, using that shell defense in the center of the ring...the only shots of significance Tito landed were to Jone's body. It was as if Jones finally admitted that he doesn't have the legs or quickness anymore to hold his hands down in the center of the ring....but he still has the fastest hands at 175. I'm not saying Jones will be victorious because Slappy is the logical choice to win, but styles make fights and Calzaghe didn't look that great himself against a 43 year old Hopkins. So maybe you should've mentioned that as well in your thread. We'll see how Slappy fairs against a guy with faster hands than him and who also throws from angles. Remember, Hopkins dropped him with a counter right hand and Jones is a great counter puncher himself and the punches will get there quicker than Bernard's. I think Roy will be prepared for JC to try and overwhelm him with his slap flurries and will look to land counter shots against the ropes. Jones is a very smart fighter and is very motivated for this fight. I'll probably eat crow for saying this but I'm picking Jones to win via UD.

 

I don't know what planet you live on but if Glen Johnson could brutally KO Roy so can Calzaghe they have the exact number of KO's. Roy has a very weak Chin.

He didn't say better boxer. He said harder puncher, and Tarver is a much harder puncher than Joe.

 

That is true. However I think Glen and Joe are very close in punching power. Glen was able to brutally KO Roy for 6 minutes.

 

I don't think you can compare Tyson with Jones. I don't think I've ever seen Jones not show up for a fight in shape....except for the first Tarver fight where he had to cut 25 pounds to make weight. I hear what your saying though and I think he desperatly wants to regain P4P recognition, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for this fight...but I'm saying that as a fan. I agree with you about Jones with his empty big talk...I remember the 3rd time he fought Tarver he was talking all kinds a crap...and when he lost he made it out like his goal was to survuve the fight w/out getting knock out, than he said he didn't want to ko Tarver because he didn't want his dad to get credit for the victory. That being said, Roy Jones is the guy that got me interested in boxing 11 years ago so as a fan I have to believe he can win....as irrational as that seems.

 

If there's a stoppage, it will be Calzaghe by accumulation. Neither guy has much power at 175. Roy used to crack a little, but he hasn't gotten a stoppage since 2002! He's finished.

And even if Roy does manage to go 12, he simply doesn't throw enough punches to win a decision. Bad fight, and a terrible result for those of us who want to remember Roy for what he was.

I'm not watching it.
