I just watched Jones v Trinidad again

You people are simply in denial. You have gotten your hopes up, remembering the old Roy. But Roy is shot. As much as you would like to believe otherwise. He is completely and utterly shot.

 

Another thing we agree on.

I love RJJ more than anyone, but he has had 4 years to age and decline further from the guy who was getting sparked by guys he would've blown away in his prime.

The difference between the RJJ who dismantled Kelly, Woods and Ruiz 2002-3 and the RJJ who struggled so badly against Tarver and Johnson in 2004-5 was incredible - hence my assertion that he destroyed his punch resistance, coordination, reflexes, ie ****ed his body up in a way he himself didn't comprehend, in piling on 20lbs of muscle then burning it all off again.

After being beaten easily by Tarver and Johnson, RJJ beat Prince Nobody, then Hanshaw (who was KO'd in 5 by a fellow non-top-10 LHW in his next fight after RJJ's points win), then couldn't stop a welterweight who hadn't won a fight in 4 years.

You guys are living in a ****ing dreamworld.

 

No because Hopkins is a diminished fighter but not a shot fighter. He has lost a lot of his speed and power but he still has his wits about him and one of the best right hands in the business, a punch that Calzaghe is vulnerable to. Jones, on the other hand, is shot. He has punchers chance.

Is this the same Dave_TheGreat I am pretty sure I have seen on many threads blowing Calzaghe's trumpet? Or are there two Dave_TheGreats??

 

The amout of ignorance and gullability required to uphold this view is huge.

 

Roy Jones Jr's defence throughout his career relied on speed, mobility, and athleticism. When a combination of age and decreased punch resistance (diminished coordination, reflexes, and resilience due to piling on a large quantity of muscle then burning it off again) meant RJJ could no longer rely on these qualities, he had not honed a defensive system yet which would allow himself to avoid taking flush shots. Therefore, he lost to fighters in 2004-5 that he would have obliterated in 2002-3.

Roy Jones Jr's last 6 fights have been 3 defeats v good opposition (KO'd twice), 3 wins v shite opposition (points).

Bernard Hopkins's defence throughout his career was superb, based on skill and smothering tactics. Age has not effected this one bit, as a matter of fact experience seems to be improving it. His defence v Calzaghe was magnificent, Joe never landed 1 single solitary significant shot the entire night despite throwing hundreds. The only reason Hopkins lost v the 2nd best fighter in the world p4p was that because of his age, he no longer had the stamina/energy/fitness/workrate to compete for 12 fast-paced rounds. His skill and power were evidence in short bursts throughout the evening.

Bernard Hopkins's last 6 fights have been 3 defeats v world-class opposition (2 SD's, 1 UD by 2 point margin), 3 wins, 2 of which were v world-class opposition, the other a mandatory defence v a no1 contender with a 40-1 record (3 UD's).


RJJ was a better fighter p4p than B-Hop, but while Hop has coped admirably with age due to his own particular style and attributes, RJJ has not coped at all with age, partly due to his style, partly due to decimating his body with the jump to heavyweight and back.


B-Hop has been competing regularly at the very top level over the past few years and has NEVER been convincingly beaten, he is always competitive, always dangerous, and IMO always the more skilled fighter in the ring.

RJJ lost the last 3 times he competed at the top level. He was KO'd cold twice, and beaten resoundingly the other time. Since then (3 years ago) he has not fought one top 10 ranked fighter.


Do I really need to go on? DREAMWORLD!
