Did I hear Jim Lampley correctly? One of the judges had Mayorga winning on the scorecards before the knockout? What the hell was that judge watching?

He wasn't looking at all like he could have gotten up. Not sure why you think it was a bad stoppage.

I still don't get what is the motivation behind stopping the fight at that point.

If the fighter is clearly out (as Mayorga was), all it does is add embarrassment to count him out. There is no need to do it.

Lets not forget, Mayorga's corner had no complaints about the lack of a count...why should we?

    Why?

Mayorga was out! Also, had he received a count Mosely, especially with two knockdowns to his credit, would have won anyway. :nut

He got his chance to fight on after the 1st knockdown. He showed he couldn't defend himself and was laid out with the 1st punch that hit him.
If that knockdown would have happened at any other point in the fight, the ref would have called it off just the same.

What's the matter?? It was like any other KO in the sport...difference was it happened seconds from the bell. if there was still a minute to go, would it have made a difference? Mayorga was done..seconds or minutes left.

It doesn't matter how much time is left. If your out your out. It's not the refs job to get a fighter through a round. I think the ref was being charitable by letting Mayorga continue after the first KD since he was having a hard time even following the instructions.

But whats he's saying is maybe he should have been given a chance to.
Also he stayed down a while because he was told to.He was telling the ref/DR he wanted to get up.They kept him down.
If he had got up by 10 he would just have gone back to his corner for treatment not into more Moseley punches. The worst was over.
I think Breal has a point....he needed to just get up,not get up to fight.BIG difference.

Mayorga was finished ... he was done after the second knockdown and it was good night for Mayorga.

    NO! Simple as that.

2:59 is still within the bounds of round. End of story.

so the ref stopped the count to avoid mayorga embarassment?

i thought refs were supposed to stop fights to avoid additional damage to the fighter.

Yes,BUT THE FIGHT WAS OVER.Why ignore that crucial issue?
He was done, but the fighting was finished.Moseley wasnt allowed to hit him anymore.Fighters are often 'done' after wailing away with everything in the last round.
